Our Condo in PCB suffered some water damage when Michael hit in October. We had some Sheetrock get wet and we decided to do a complete remodel since we were having some work done. I have NEVER in my life been lied to as many times as I have dealing with carpenters, tile installers, painters, plumbers, etc you just name the trade. After 6 months of letting my wife and her Business Partner take care of the issues, I decided I needed to see what was going on myself.

I have been down two times in the last week and both times was fuming when I left. The quality of workmanship is terrible. I go behind them and redo half of what they have done using their tools. They don’t show up until lunchtime and leave at 3:00. I could go on and on but I won’t. I will probably be going back in a couple of days to finish everything myself. I am ticked off about all this runaround and plan on filing a report with the FL Better Business Bureau about the General Contractor over this project. If you are a skilled tradesman that is honest and dependable, you could make a fortune in FL today doing repairs.

That is all. RANT OVER

There’s too much work. Contractors/tradesmen can pick and choose right now, making it hard to find a quality person. It doesn’t make it right but it is what it is.

Most just get started and take on another to keep you on their hook without finishing. I'm breaking my line and spitting out the hooks.

It makes it hard too when you live 6 hours away. If you could drop by 3 times a week, it would probably light a fire under them.

You might else well get use to it Tradesmen are a dying breed and that's a fact.

I've been doing electrical work for 40 years and have never seen anything like it is now.

If you hire these kids now days it's just like running a daycare you don't know if they are going to show up or if they show up you don't know if they are going to work all day.

And then to top it off they don't know anything except how to use a cell phone

The situation is bad. I deal with it daily.

Everyone has to go to college and allegedly all 130,000 illegals that came across last month are going to do those jobs.. Right?

Wrong.

Its rough right now. It's all trades and its the same now matter the location. I think its slightly better in industrial construction mainly due to more detailed contracts and more project management/oversight. Residential is just plain horrible right now.

A knowledgeable hardworking individual with experience (in their 30's) are very sought after and can just about name their price in the construction world right now.

There are quality people out there. If you’re in a rush for something and refuse to wait the good guys out, you’re gonna end up with a dishonest person that don’t work much, and probably for a reason. Not saying that’s what you did. But just in general, if someone can be there to start tomorrow, you better beware.

Panama City has always been lacking in quality trades. The way economy is now, if someone isn’t too busy to get to you soon, there’s a reason. I can’t hire anyone, even starting at 25/hr. I can’t even think about doing individual’s work, contractors get priority because they pay my bills consistently. Just some perspective. The few owners I’ve worked with lately may say same things about me, but I don’t have time to deal with their inexperience, lack of schedule, waiting on material, and constant changes. Not saying that’s your situation, but my patience is low when I’m working 10+hrs a day going weeks without days off. Hope it gets better.

865.........we have been down since October 16 of last year when Michael hit. The best tradesman I hired was my son. He completely tore out everything in it by himself in one day. Hauled it all off and even cleaned up before leaving. Since the demo, it has all gone Downhill..

We got a call yesterday saying everything was completed and ready to live in. Seems management laid down the law to the contractors there about not doing what they promised they would. Told them to get it done, or don't come back. Looks like that was all that was needed..

I never hire anyone but last winter I hired a plumber Roto rooter and $500 later he wanted $500 more to fix the same problem he was supposed to fix, told me it would take another man and visit. so I rented an auger for $50 and finished the job in 5minutes. Iam gonna hate getting old because I don't trust anyones work anymore.

Wrong.
. This problem I’ve seen increasing for years. When I was a 1st year apprentice you could work your butt off and actually climb the ladder to improve your lifestyle. You could also get by starting a family and being able to support them off of your work ethic and not living on the entitlement system. Republicans are just as much to blame for the situation we are in as democrats. As the illegal alien flow continued in the early nineties the trade standards were lowered to meet the ability of the illegal labor force. So now the number of true craftsman is limited and can’t keep up with the volume of work available. No young Americans are coming into the trades because of the depressed wages that the illegals have brought about. I wouldn’t recommend any young person getting into a trade if they can find anything else. And this is coming from a person that a trade helped make it out the conditions from a Carter presidency. If we had enforced nation wide e-verify then I could see the trades improving.
