ive got a hunt set up for next may in central nebraska and was wondering if anybody knows if the turkey in that area are hybrids or merriams?

Hybrids, I believe all the merriams are up north near the border.

Well that's the way the nwtf recognizes a slam. But im sure there have been many of " Merriams" killed in non-Merriam areas.

i saw a map on nwtf website but was wondering if it was right or not. yes it is right by the NWTF standards, BUT the ones in the South are just as white as the ones in the North for the most part. I guess what I am trying to say is that most of the birds in the state will appear to be Merriams even if they are not in the Merrimas area on the NWTF map.The Eastern and Southeastern part of the state is where I would say you will get more hybrid or rio looking birds at. In the areas near KS you will have some that are white as snow and some buff colored. You can pick the ones out that you want to shoot most of the time that look like the subspecies you are after in those hybrid areas. There are a bunch of birds up there, have fun, post pics.

Another example of the NWTF map not being spot on is the Osceolla. I have seen birds come out of SC, South GA, LA, MS and extreme Southern Alabama that have the black wing bars and small body characteristics of an Osceolla, but you will never see the NWTF change that range. There is to much money in it for outfitters, landowners, and the state of FL if an Osceolla can only be hunted in FL. Just my opinion of course and I am no biologist.

Well I actually hunted a private farm but still I imagine its about the same.
Lots of birds in both causes, I liked the private land birds a little better just like I would here at home.

True, but there private land has just as many birds in most cases and not hunted as much. Both are better then any hunting in Alabama IMO. As far as bird numbers.
