Lyndsey Sherrod Bates, 22, was a special education teacher at Madison High School in Madison County. She was arrested and booked into Madison County jail on Friday, charged with engaging in a sex act with a student younger than 19. Bates is also charged with several misdemeanors including three counts of distributing obscene material to a student and one count of having sexual contact with a student, as per Madison County jail records. She turned herself into the jail around 4.30pm Friday and her bail has been set at $32,000, according to AL.com. She is married to Drew Bates, the son of Madison County sheriff's office chief deputy Stacy Bates, and the office is investigating her case. 'The Sheriff’s Office started an investigation as soon as the allegations were brought to our attention, and Chief Bates was never involved in that investigation,' Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner in a statement. The office clarified that Lyndsey's relationship to Stacy Bates 'in no way has affected the investigative process or urgency leading to today’s arrest, nor to the future criminal justice proceedings'. 'Because the victim(s) in these charges are juveniles no specific details of the investigation are being released at this time,' office spokesman Donny Shaw said in a statement. Bates had started working at Madison County High at the beginning of this school year and has resigned in light of the allegations. At the school she worked as a special education teacher and coached junior varsity and varsity volleyball, according to Heavy. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement. Our system fully condemns such actions and we are also offering counseling for our students,' Madison County Superintendent Matt Massey said in a statement. Bates married Drew Bates on March 10, 2018, in Athens, Alabama. Drew also works in law enforcement, following in his father's steps. Stacy Bates has been the chief deputy of the county since January 2019 and formerly was a cop at the Athens Police Department and a lieutenant with Huntsville Police Department.

If the name didn't give it away, Lyndsey L. Sherrod Bates' parents are Colbert County natives. They attended Mars Hill Bible School before earning degrees from separate colleges. Their daughter Lyndsey was raised in Athens and attended Athens Bible School and Auburn University. In short, Lyndsey came from a more than functional family and should have had a great life ahead of her.
On May 10th of last year, Lyndsey married a young man who's currently working in law enforcement. His father is the chief deputy of Madison County, a fact that some are saying may just save Lyndsey's bacon, or at least keep her out of prison. In August of 2018, Lyndsey began her short-lived teaching career at Madison County High School where she taught special education classes (now called "inclusion") and coached both junior and senior varsity volleyball.
Then at some recent point, authorities were notified that Lyndsey was having improper sexual contact with at least two students. After a short investigation, which the Madison County Sheriff's office is extremely eager to say did not include her father-in-law, Lyndsey turned herself in at 5:09 p.m. yesterday and was charged with:
1. Engaging in sex with a student under the age of 19.
2. Sexual contact with a student under the age of 19.
3. Sending obscene materials to a student under the age of 19 - Three counts.
Bates, who had already resigned from her position with Madison County Schools, quickly posted the 32K bond and was released. Her status on Facebook now lists her as "single."

Where does it say the student was a special ed student? It says she is a special ed teacher, it doesn’t say the student is special ed.
