They paid less in total taxes and the government didn't get to keep their money for a year I have had to explain this to several people complaining about their taxes. So far I haven't seen one that actually had to pay more taxes when compared to comparable earnings on prior year returns. Everyone was thrilled during early 2018 when they saw an extra $20-$50 on their checks but pissed because their refund wasn't a grand like it was last year. I owed more than normal. If they wouldn't have messed with the withholdings I would have been fine, but I fixed that. Hopefully if nothing changes I will break even next year.
