Refund amount may not be a good indicator of the total tax bill. The withholding rates were less following the tax cuts.

^^This^^ Most folks can’t understand they are getting more money throughout the year on their paychecks. Then again, most folks can’t understand getting a refund isn’t a good thing and that the ideal situation is to break even.

Just turned mine in, I pay every year so hoping I don't pay as much. The wife did make about 14,000 less this year. If I break even it's a win-win

I get hammered on withholding because of the way I get paid. Not much to do about it.Luckily I get saved in the end by my farm. That said I got my largest refund ever.Don't know if it was Trump or depreciation on a new JD 5055e.

Got back a return and paid less total than normal so it was a win for me. I’m even getting $600 back from Alabama. We have paid in every year since I can remember .

That's the same thing. Trump's tax cuts are what let you depreciate that bad boy all at once. Didn't use to be that way.

Definitely a plus for me. Our overall effective tax rate went down over 3%. Biggest hitters were the higher standard deduction and the child tax credit increase.

About the same. Sadly, I have to use any tax refund I get to pay my Mom's outrageous property taxes in Texas.

Yall sure about that? I'm almost sure I saw where the mileage deduction is up about 3 cents per mile for 2019.

This^^ it went up 1 cent from 53.5 to 54.5 2018

But hey, no income tax!

That’s why anytime anybody talks about how some state has it so good,... they’re getting you somewhere

Yep. They make up for it in other places. Florida has no state income tax either, but property taxes are quite a bit higher than Alabama.

Yep, but some don't realize that they're not able to claim some of the stuff they used to have to itemize and claim because of the higher standard deduction. They think they're getting screwed, but they're not.

Maybe it can be deducted if you own your own business, but I can't claim any work related expenses this year on the federal return. The state will still let you do it. My milage alone is more than the 24k standard deduction. It is what it is, im sure most folks were helped especially if they didn't itemize

Definitely helped us. I do wish they’d allow work related items the option to be included.

My paycheck went up with the tax cuts, and my return was larger (by a good bit).

Not sure yet. Did not pay much tax during the year. But got hammered by the feds at the end. Got some back from the state.
This being my first year of being retired I have to figure out exactly how I really came out.
