Did Trump's new scale help or hurt your returns? The accountant told me we were hurt by it. Going to have to change my deductions asap.

90% of the the people claiming it hurt them because they are getting a smaller refund or are having to pay actually paid less taxes because their withholdings changed. They paid less in total taxes and the government didn't get to keep their money for a year

Thank you. Glad someone pointed that out. We actually broke even at the end of the tax season, but we paid less all year long. So it was a winner for us. Too many people view their tax "refund" as some kind of windfall at the end of the year, but I see it as me loaning my hard earned money to the government and them not paying me any interest on it. I have posted this before, but I honestly believe that if no one was deducted taxes from their paychecks and then had to write a big fat check to government at the end of the year there would be a serious reckoning when people really saw how much they had to pay for the chitty services and chitty government they receive in return. There would be a revolution of sorts. But with withholding taxes it's like a slow quiet theft, and everyone just says, "Oh well, that's just the way it is..." and just quietly accepts it.

I should have clarified better. I have a CPA, and realize getting any type of return is just an interest-free loan to Uncle Sam. Other investments, consulting, sold a house amoung other things impacted us. We will be better prepared next year.

Return wise the feds gave me back what amounts to a rounding error. No noticeable difference from years past, and not enough to cover a good Saturday night bar tab.
Moving from NC to S.C. made a world of difference. First time I didn’t owe the state gov’t since I left Alabama.

They paid less in total taxes and the government didn't get to keep their money for a year I have had to explain this to several people complaining about their taxes. So far I haven't seen one that actually had to pay more taxes when compared to comparable earnings on prior year returns. Everyone was thrilled during early 2018 when they saw an extra $20-$50 on their checks but pissed because their refund wasn't a grand like it was last year.
