You know... That is a good question. One thing is that I will be able to hunt and fish again, which I haven't done in over 3 years now.

The other thing is that I have discovered that I really like to work with wood. I'm thinking of building a farmhouse table for the cabin and also a vanity (Again for the cabin) for Mrs. Irish out of an extra piece of this live edge sycamore that I have.

I need to clear out the trees that we cut to open up the view. I'm going to plant something out there to act as a ground cover and/or also to attract deer. I look off that top deck and down the mountain and think how easy it would be to walk out the bedroom in my jammies on and my Winchester 30-30 in hand early in the morning and fill up the freezer with venison.

Plus I have fruit trees to plant, a arbor for muscadines that I need to build and plant.

Build a shop.

Build a garden shed.

Build a raised bed garden.

Build a outdoor covered patio with center fire pit and inverted cone chimney.

Etc...

We plan on turning it into our city slicker homestead up there so I'm sure there will always be something to piddle around with.

Plus there's a lot of dirt roads and forest trails up there that I haven't explored in my Jeep yet...

Thank you. The subway tile adds a nice contrast to an otherwise rustic cabin. We wanted to make the kitchen something a little special, since we love to cook. It will especially be nice when we have guest over, because we are usually cooking for them and the open kitchen and floor plan allows the conversations to flow while Mrs. Irish and I are in the kitchen.

Thank you. Cabin building all day makes you hungry... So we at least try to cook decent while we are there. The gas range will be there next week, as will the fridge. We're really looking forward to that.

I know the feeling, worked from 10am-930pm at the in-laws lake house saturday, helping the replace deck railing. Been working my butt off down there the last two years basically redoing their house. A lot of houses have gone into it.

OK guys... I took another vacation day today, and I'm already up here waiting on first light to cook some breakfast and get the crew of me, my brother, my nephew and later today Mrs. Irish all working together to finish this thing out.

It was just Mrs. Irish and I last weekend, but we worked our asses off...

I finished up almost all the trim, which included all the upstairs door trim and baseboards.

... And we still found time to eat some great meals at two different friend's cabins (See the Aldeer buffet for those posts)

I got the stacked laundry center ordered this week and the giant piece of glass for the shower showed up. (Hopefully in one piece...)

This weekend we plan on:

Getting the siding on the upper back portion of the house after we ripped all the old stuff off to find the leaks.
Finishing the stair rail
Hook up the ice maker
Finish the trim at the top of the stair well and bathroom ceilings
Shelving installed in the closets
Install shower glass

Anyway... here's a few pics from last weekend:

And the finished kitchen. i just need a few pieces of trim up at the top to finish it out, and that will get done this weekend... Oh... and I'm going to add some hanging shelves made out of the same Acadia butcher block as the counter tops. They will hand from the ceiling joists via some galvanized rods of something like that. I haven't figured it all out in my head yet.




I measured just right on the fridge. I had about 1/2" on either side to spare. It looks great there. It's a nice fridge for the money. I think we only spent about $1000 when it was on sale. I'm going to build a shelf up top for Mrs. Irish's cookbooks.

Beautiful cabin. You should be proud of the work that all of you have accomplished. On a side note, what did y'all think of that camping stove? I have been toying with the idea of buying that same model and was wondering how well it worked and what the pros and cons were. Again, great job. Hope you both enjoy it for a long time to come.

No we are leaving all the joists exposed. The sub floors and the roof decking are all tongue and groove. So we left everything exposed so you can see all that.

Another hard working weekend, but we got a lot accomplished.

We sealed up everything on the upper backside of the cabin and got new siding installed and caulked. My nephew helped me while Mrs. Irish helped my brother. I don't know how anything could leak now. (Famous last words... )

We got the stair rail finished. I thought my brother would never get done. He is a perfectionist. I probably have more labor paid to him for the slate shower and the stairs than anything else in the cabin... but at least they are done. We still have to stain and seal them, but his work is done.



We also got the downstairs half bath finally finished. The counter top is a live edge sycamore slab with a copper vessel sink and a farmhouse style faucet. The sycamore was sanded and sealed with "Good Stuff" 5 times.



Of course we ate good. We went over to Rome for dinner with friends at Harvest Moon. They serve one of my favorite burgers "The Red headed Stranger." While sitting at the bar waiting to be seated we had their "Soul Rolls" which are basically egg rolls with collard greens in them. Really good food.



Saturday night Irish Jr. and his girlfriend came up so for the 6 of us we fixed a slow cooked Italian meat sauce and of course Mrs. Irish made a great salad to go with it...

Another good weekend at the cabin. It was just Mrs. Irish and I and so we had some time to contemplate about where we are right now. We both feel so blessed, but at the same time we know that we have worked our asses off to get where we are.

We look around now and we still can't believe that this is our place and it's paid for. We honestly feel like we are staying on someone else's VRBO cabin. It feels like some kind of dream. Neither one of us ever thought we would have something like this. It sounds like a cliche, but I would tell any of you if you have a dream, you can make it happen with enough planning, perseverance and hard work.

Speaking of work, we got both bathrooms completely finished this weekend. Downstairs we finished the vanity cabinet.



Upstairs I finished all the trim work around the ceiling and all the exposed rafters. Which was a lot of work, because all the lumber was cut at a local sawmill and just about every piece has to be ripped and cut to length. All the trim has been that way.

I still have to build a sliding barn door for that upper storage area.





I also installed the light fixture for the dining room. Of course I had to pretty much completely rewire the thing as all of those pendants were about 8' long... Seriously. We got he dining room table moved up there. It's Mrs. Irish's girlfriend's that has been in our junk room for about 3 years. Hey Doekiller, isn't possession something like nine tenth's of the law? Regardless it's ours now.





Of course we found time to eat good and enjoy the view with a good cigar and some adult beverages...
