A borrowed Remington 742 30.06. It made a big hole in that little button buck. I was 42.

Marlin 336 in thutty-thutty caliber at Oakmulgee WMA.
Shot the doe and then threw it up on my shoulder like the movie injuns do. Blood went all over me. I looked like an axe murderer. I hid my rifle and started dragging my deer. It was at least 2 miles, if not 3, back to the truck. There was a bald spot on each hind quarter big enough to lay your foot in. Then I went back and got my rifle and while I was there, a truck went by on my right side not 200yds away. After the blood bath and the long drag, I was still on top of the world.

410 single shot, that my dad had to make me a homemade stock. The original stock was too long for my arms. I was seven years old, 39 now, and I still remember everything about that day like it was yesterday.

Me too. It was my Dad's. I have recently inherited one just like it from my wife's late grandfather. I will kill a deer with it next year. Old school, no scope. CD.
that's interesting. my son just inherited his maternal grandfathers 1966 remington 742 in 30-06. the gun was a gift to my father-in-law from his father-in-law. it's the remington 150th aniversary model. it has a circa 1966 weaver fixed magnification ~3X scope on high rise mounts and iron sights. it's a cool gun, but doesn't really shoot that well at least with the loads we've tried in it. my son wants to kill a deer with it on his grandfathers farm in mississippi next season. my father-in-law killed his first deer with the 742 on togo island in mississippi river.

My first deer kill was with a rifle. It was with a Weatherby Vanguard VGX in .270 win. caliber.
