Looking for opions on how many deer should be harvested per acre. I know it will varey depending on weather you have a healthy / sizable herd. But on average if the herd is healthy how many mature deer would you harvest per acre?

I'd say at least 10 per acre. That should get the population to a sustainable level.

But seriously, that question is impossible to answer without knowing how many deer are there and what the habitat looks like.

Kang on here suggested a few years back that I need to kill 3-4 per acre and I've been doing that for the last few years. The population has really gotten in check and bucks have gotten more quality with more regular sightings.

10 per acre? Wow that seems like a lot. That would be 1000 deer per 100 ecres.

we shoot for more like 6 an acre.

1,000 acres.

6,000 killed this year. Keeping your knife sharp is really the biggest problem

I’m asking how many should be harvested if the herd is already healthy and at a good ratio. Not to bring down the number or bring up the number. To sustain a healthy ratio that’s already good.

We have killed 9(5 bucks and 4 does) off our 1,900 acres. 1 buck was 2, one was 3, the other 3 were 4-6

Impossible to correctly estimate without knowing your current deer density.

The answer would be different for everyone on here. It depends on habitat quality and how many deer you have. Find what works for your place and stick to it.

I only have a 10 acre tract that I hunt every other weekend to keep the pressure down. I normally shoot 4 or 5 good mature bucks off of it a year myself. My brother hunts it the weekends I don't and he shot 4 bucks this year himself. And we continuously have good bucks show up. It's all about location. Our 10 acres borders the Portland Landing SOA in Dallas county.

We actually call this little secret spot the Dean-a-Rosa. Named after the Dean family that owned so much property in that area years ago.

Sounds reasonable. And legal too!

10 mature bucks off 10 acres is about what I'd expect. Killing 40-50 does there should keep the habitat in check.

Buck or bucks and does? 1 per 50 acres. Total deer harvest would seem normal.
We killed 13 does and 2 bucks on our 880 acres this year.

I really don’t see the big deal if he does or doesn’t.

Well, seeing there is a state wide 3 buck limit, if he “himself” kills 4 or 5 bucks a year than he is either 1 or 2 bucks over the limit

If them 6 does were still living you’d at least have a little bit easier time seeing some next year. I love shooting them and and I’m a fat kid has always loved eating them but sometimes I think you’re better off saying you just gonna let em go for this year or maybe even shoot a spike or something if you want one to eat. None of my business but it’s just a thought.
