stob, i have an 1894 in .44. williams fire sights on it. i've not killed a deer with it yet. but with my 67.5 year old eyes, i'm afraid, i'll have to go to a lower power scope. i'm thinking a 2.5 X old school leupold or other, maybe even a scout set-up. i don't want to lose the little rifle's carry-ability ...

If you shoot the low power stuff you can eat right up to the hole. If you shoot the high power stuff it will bruise the whole ribcage and look like someone threw a can of soup through it sideways.

If you're just 100 yards and in use a rifled slug barrel. A 12g slug will straight knock em down

I will just take my old .270. I've killed them at 5 yards and i've killed them at 400 yards.

22 mag tween the eyes or in the ear hole. No tracking needed πŸ˜‚

Seriously though, speed kills. I like big heavy bullets too but a FAST bullet seems to put them down where they stand more readily.

I set up a 7mm-08 Kimber Montana with a Vortex Razor 1.5-8X32 scope in Talley lightweights for my woods rifle. It's light and fast at under 6lbs,and plenty powerful for close or far. I hunt with 160 GK HP's when I expect close shots.

I don't like levers cause they don't fit me well,so this is the lightest fastest woods gun in a round that's plenty powerful but low enough recoil that you can get another shot of you need to and won't be flinching.

I love a Remington 7600 carbine length in 308 also.

Not even 1 person has mentioned the 6.5 creedmoor. Those guys are probably too busy telling their buddies how it’s the best thing that has ever happened to deer hunting since corn to read this thread.

The only thing that a creedmor has that a .270 doesn’t is the ability to be built on an AR platform. Besides that a .270 is the absolute best North American big game Rifle for shots out to 500 yards. Beyond that it gets interesting. Not outside 100 it’s a 12g slug all day long.

30-30 150 or 170 gr will do the trick, and has for me.

Where? I’ve never seen any long action cartridges built in the AR platform

Very skeptical of that.... I’ve never heard of it being done and that’s just the upper assembly with no reviews. Doesn’t tell me if it’s a-10 or -15 platform or what but it’s definitely got me curious.... thanks for sharing
