I’ve been envious of you guys traveling all over and killing turkeys for too long 😀
It looks like I’m going on my first OOS trip to Nebraska in May! I’m so excited to see some new country and hopefully kill some Merriams!

You will go back every year now. If I could suggest one thing it would be wear your camo everywhere you go and strike up conversations with everyone that looks like a farmer. They hate turkeys up there and you can come up with some land in a hurry. Most of the time they will start the conversation and ask you what you are hunting and where you are from. They will want to be your best friends when they find out you are from Alabama. I don’t know what it is about folks from Alabama but they are intrigued by us. I went up there with Stony Brock and his brother Joey and we got up there on Sun and there wasn’t anything open where we could get a bite to eat. They were having a fundraiser at the senior center and you would get a ham dinner plate for $6. We walked in there and I thought those old ladies were going to fight over who got to sit beside us. Lol....good times.

That’s awesome brother! Had to postpone ours until the following spring when we found out we’re having another child and he’s due May 1st so hopefully I can go in 2020 unless you and BC wipe em out!

Youll have a great time. One of my favorite places to hunt. Lots of merriam gobblers and beautiful country. And like BC said, folks are really nice out there.

Depending on where your going you may be killing hybrids. I been twice and 95% of birds seen are hybrids.

BC is right about just knocking on doors. I’ve always used an outfitter in Nebraska but in Kansas, we just knock on doors. If we spot birds in a field, we just knock on the nearest farmhouse door. We were never turned down.

Use the Alabama connection to your advantage. Going in our biggest advantage was twofold and I always made these points: 1. We’re only hunting for three days and then we’re headed back to Bama 2. It’s just turkeys not deer. Folks in Kansas are very particular about deer rights but don’t care one bit about shooting their turkeys. Most of the folks were just appreciative of the fact that we even asked. I’ve got a guy I met in Kansas that starts scouting for me two weeks before I even get there. I call him up and tell him my dates and he starts being on the lookout. Just nice hardworking people.

My first ever OOS hunting trip was to Nebraska 4 or 5 years ago. I killed one bird up there and other close calls . Since then I've been to Florida, Oklahoma and Texas. Nebraska was the most enjoyable to me just because how different the scenery and terrain is from what were used to down here. Seen lots of other game too. If it wasn't for being such a journey of a drive I'd go every year.
