My father in law's brother, Sgt. James Smith, age 93...WWII combat wounded veteran, Normandy invasion force, Army Scout, went behind enemy lines 27 times, MIA for 2 months after being shot 4 times and found then treated in field hospital.
He grew up poor in typical rural Mississippi fashion in the 1920s-1930s. Volunteered for the Army at age 18. Went to war. Survived. Returned home and married his high school sweetheart, had 3 sons who adored him and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who thought he hung the moon. He was kind and honorable but would whip an arse in a heartbeat if anyone messed with his family. Self employed for 50 years and was successful. Loving family made him rich. Would help anyone in need and always smiled. He lived out his faith in Christ through his actions. The outpouring at the funeral today proved his wealth in life which had nothing to do with his bank account. As an inlaw, I only had the honor of knowing him for 29 years but I was blessed by that time.
As TAPS echoed in the oaks in the sleepy community of Sharon, MS, & as the folded American flag was presented to his sons...this earth said farewell to a great representative of the greatest generation. RIP Uncle Buddy.

An American hero...RIP soldier. May God Bless the United States of America for which so many (Buddy being one) sacrificed and fought so hard and endured so much for our freedom! As a result, we should never think lightly of our freedoms.

Sounds like his life would make a great book, but there are so many of that generation whose life would also make a great book. By today's standard's Uncle Buddy is extraordinary, but if asked, I bet he would tell you that he just did what he had to do. that was the way of his generation.

Just wanted to add that the US is full of Uncle Buddys, but we are losing them at an astonishing rate. I wish I had known my neighbor Mr. Bob Sloane better before he passed away. He did some heroic things in the Pacific and was wounded but through bureaucratic FUBARS, he never received his Purple Heart. A local reporter and fellow Marine heard of this and put the wheels in motion to correct this oversight. Sadly, Mr. Sloane passed away before it got done so it was posthumously awarded. Those that lived around him never knew the amazing things he did, because just like Uncle Buddy, he just simply did what he perceived as his duty. I may not often agree with the liberal news media, but Brokaw was right. They truly are "The Greatest Generation". Don't be a Jawbone and miss the opportunity to thank a WWII vet and shake his hand.
