Let’s say you have a piece of property that has 16 year old unthinned pines and various SMZs. What’s your experience on where bucks bed in these types of areas? South facing slopes in the SMZs? On points with the predominant wind at their back? What are the things you look for when trying to locate prime bedding areas?

Streamside management zone. It is where they leave the timber standing along creeks when they cut a place.

Have you walked around and looked for beds? I would expect them to bed in and around down treetops and fallen trees if its clean under the 16 yr old pines

The specific buck I’m Hunting won’t score much but is one of the biggest body deer I’ve ever seen in Alabama. I’m not gonna do anything to bump him out of the area so I don’t want to do much, if any, in season scouting for him. Just trying to get a better idea. Our place is not really pressured. 3 guys Hunting 700 acres. The plot I hunted this evening hasn’t been hunted since October. We don’t shoot does hardly ever and we are seeing bucks routinely but this warrior is old and smart.

Just be in the plot closest to his area as often as possible when the breeding is occurring and you will catch up with him.

Assuming you are getting pics of him on the fields? I would get off them green fields to hunt travel routes to beds. I would keep settling up a little deeper each sit, try and slip in and set up as quietly as possible.
Study your topo map.

I have always found the most beds along the edges of the pines and SMZ's. Generally on a south facing slope or point. Also at the very ends of fingers of hardwoods that run up into the pines.

I am SOOOO glad someone finally asked. I have never known what SMZ stood for and I’ve always been too embarrassed to ask.

Streamside Management ZonesA streamside management zone (SMZ) is a strip of land immediately adjacent to a water of the state where soils, organic matter and vegetation are managed to protect the physical, chemical and biological integrity of surface water adjacent to and downstream from forestry operations.
