just gonna throw this out there. ive hunted for 30 years of my life and been fortunate to shoot several really good deer. Never been really big on game cameras but have always used them.

Before/After pictures are awesome to look at and for certain if it is trully same deer photoed and then shot. However, I have 2 identical 8 points measure out the same, tine length within inch of each other, same black markings on their faces but shot 150 miles from each other.

so with that said....I find it very very very very very difficult to believe a deer photgraphed in 2007 you can follow to 2012 and say you have watched that particular deer for 5 years....UNLESS THERE IS A DISTINGUISHING MARK somewhere that is easily seen I dont think it can be done with only growth and declining racks only. Hell even from 1 year to the next for that matter.....just because the camera was on same tree, pointed in same direction, on the same angle and everything....

ofcourse this is my opinion on the matter anyway.

Hmmmm!! No replies in 2 days! I am gonna assume this was directed at me!!! If not, disregard my post! If so, looks like you need more education on deer other than what you think you know. I'm no expert, but my 40 years of deer hunting and self study, says that a little observation and Common Sense goes a long way.

no it was not directed toward anyone in particular....so dont feel special...lol. i just find it difficult for me personally to identify a deer year to year without a tear in its ear, marking or so forth. Wasnt a hostile post just a personal observation.....but im no expert for damn sure....just someone with a opinion. besides has nothing to do with common sense maybe just a eagle of an eye.

No problem, I just felt goaded....

Read up on Deer Core Areas, that may shed some light on your doubts. There have been lots of studies on it, even with telemetry...

Lumberbrok, I feel the same way...I too am an avid "trail cam guy" and I don't feel very confident in identifying a buck from year to year without obvious characteristics. I know this is kind of "off subject", but I have a few pictures (all have been posted on here before) that I'd like to share to get some opinions...Just FYI, all dates/times are correct

This buck is obviously the same, due to the rip in his left ear. I was very shocked and excited to see the amount of growth in just a few months time!

I got this buck on camera last January/February and feel like this COULD be the same buck again this year (but, not sure by any means).

I will show you a pic of how much they can change in 1 year robert. So I am with you on identifying one without something being different that you can identify him with other than horns.I have pics of a nine point that went to a twelve point in one year.Rack changed A LOT.I knew it was the same deer because his ear had a tear in it.If it wouldn't have been for the ear I woulda just wrote it off as a different buck.

all it takes is a practiced eye and lots of experience. I've done it for years on dozens of years. It ain't that hard.

I'll give ya an example. I used to see a particular buck on a friends place. I saw him a lot over several years. Took a lot of pics of him. I called him Jr. One day in Feb, after antler drop, he and I were riding around and spotted a buck 150 yards away in a greenfield. I told him that was Jr. He said I was full of it. How could I tell without antlers and at that range.

We drove closer and he turned around showing the other side, he had a particular scar on his ribs from fighting. At 50 yards it was definetly Jr..

How could I tell. Jr had a slightly odd way of looking at you, like he was nearsighted, the angle of his head. I had taken note of that. And I've done it for dozens of years on a LOT of deer.

All bucks are different in some telling way. Antler shape isn't the only way to id a buck. Ya just have to actually SEE the deer and pay attention.

I can understand really both sides of the debate....but again personally whether it is less persistence, less knowledge or whatever but in me identifying ....it is difficult.

Troy you hunting google eyed deer or what? LOL

Travis i remember the deer you are talking about Trent showing me pics of it or maybe it was you 1 night.

AUDEER....I cant see your pics for some reason.

lumberbrok, no google eyed deer, just years of experience. I couldn't even begin to count the number of "instances" of looking at a buck. Must be several thousand though. And not just "seeing" a deer...paying attention to detail of that particular deer.

and a desire to learn to live age bucks...

and looking at several thousand game cam pics to ID and age bucks....

I don't even really feel worthy to try to follow a statement from Troy on this but I'll add that if you want to identify deer from one year to the next, the antlers should be looked at last. At least in my opinion. I look for body characteristics first. Example, unusual hair markings, scars, color, the way they carry themselves or hold their heads they way Troy said. In my opinion, antlers are just a bonus.

After using cameras for close to 10 years I would say that tracking a buck for 3-4 years can be accomplished quite often but not with every buck. A lot of 2.5 year olds have something that makes them unique. In my experience it's usually the browtines. They seem to stay the same as far as length, angle, etc. if they simply have 2" perfectly straight brows then hard to track but if one is longer than the other or if they curve a particular direction that trait seems to continue year after year. Also unique sticker points etc. also find that our bucks use the same summer core area year after year

After being in the cattle business all my life and being able to identify 200-300 different cattle and know each's ID number (and usually sire & dam) by memory, I look at differences in coloration in deer first, then physical differences.(Shape of head, length of ears, fullness of brisket, etc.)

Every deer is marked differently. All you have to do is recognize it.

As Troy said. It takes a lot of observing and really studying the different characteristics.

It's really easier to differentiate deer than it is in a pasture full of solid black, solid white, or hereford cattle.

It's simply something you learn to do and not think much about it.

Look hard at each deer you have on your wall. They are all different but in a subtle way.
