Was doing some scouting today and ran across two fresh scrapes. One was wet in the middle where it had recently been serviced. My question: Our rut has been during the period a week before to a week after Christmas. What's the deal on seeing these scrapes now. Is it normal? Has the extended hot weather caused this behavior?
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

When buck's testosterone rises and they shed their velvet they are ready to breed , however , the does aren't. It DOES NOT mean the rut is on in your area. The bucks are ready anytime they shed velvet till they cast their antlers .
Think of the line in the song Chattahoochee " I was willing but she wasn't ready".

Great place to hang a camera. You can get pictures of entire bachelor groups. I find them in August when I get in the woods and all the way thru turkey season (active).

My son read an article the other day that said a lot of early scrapes are actually made by doe deer. That was news to me.

I know they can make them, I just always figured spikes were making them real early. We have some showing up and our rut is after Christmas thru the end of January. We usually don't see them quite this early, its usually middle of November.

Rut will be full swing at my farm in 3 weeks. Scrapes are all over already. Trail cam pics showing bucks pushing does around too. The next real hard card snap will have them out and fired up. 4 years ago best chasing we had was week of ML season. Yep, youth season & muzzleloader is as good as it gets at my place.
He never promised that the cross would not get heavy & the hill would not be hard to climb.

I know of two spots on my place in Tensaw that there will be scrapes the 2nd week of October. I've got pics of bucks making them still in full velvet. Our bucks don't get stupid till the 25th of January.

I saw scrapes last week in southern Russell county. Young bucks are always ready when the velvet comes off. My guess would be spikes and other 2 year olds making them. Wouldnt pay them too much attention just yet

They check scrapes all year long. They increase activity as soon as velvet peels and it peaks pre-rut.
