Some of you make me think you are rookies. Deer have scrapes all year, not as many, but they serve as kind of a bulletin board to say "HI" I'm in your area. They start to appear as soon as the velvet comes off and are usually small in size. Usually, it's the young inexperienced bucks and does. This is nothing new and temps have nothing to do with scraping or the rut. The only difference is that during hot spells most rutting activity is done at night.

You don't know jack schit about these deer up in N bama in our little area. We saw the "velvet scrapes" months ago here. Bucks got black tarsals and these scrapes are truck hood sized. It's fixing to get jumping round here

You see the majority of fawns hit the ground somewhere around June first then?

Yessir. Hit one bush hogging June 5 three years ago. Sent matt Brock a pic of a button head a few weeks ago that was born early June. Easily.

What county?

Limestone/lauderdale. The caveat to it tho is the herd has stuck to its Michigan genes after all these years after restocking and EHD decimated my herd 2 years ago. It'll be 2 more years before we get bucks age back to where we need them. But rebounding is looking promising.

That's good, earlier they are born they get a better jump start on winter.

You can start your own scrape under a licking branch with a steel rake and your own piss, works like a charm. No need for store bought urine.

Ok.....so I call bull squat on a bunch of this. I have hunted all over Alabama for 45 years and I have seen a few territory scrapes but I have never seen what I am seeing right now. Mature Bucks tending scrapes...tons of scrapes...everywhere!!!! All of our trails are littered with them as if it is peak of rut. Rubs everywhere too. This is occurring in Jeff Co. Never seen or heard of such. Something is different this year.

The rut has never, isn’t this year, and probably won’t in the future, change from the predetermined time it has started every other year. Does are genetically programmed to come into estrous at the same time each year, and they have done that very predictably for a long time. You may be seeing the signs of a buck that’s a little extra eager this year, but he doesn’t determine when the does go into estrous. They do. The rut will occur as usual. It’s not bull squat. Bucks really pick up scraping activity as soon as their velvet peels, which just happened a few weeks ago. Nothing out of the ordinary. If anything is unusual about it it could be a good sign. With an increase in buck age structure and more competition you’ll see more rutting activity. Are you hunting an area with more mature bucks than in the past?

Im pretty sure he wouldnt know a big buck if it jumped up and bit him. He probably has never even seen anything bigger then a dang spike, much less shot one.
