Has a green gross B&C score of maybe 9" and I killed it with a rifle. Both were things I had no intentions of doing this year.
I wanted my son to shoot a deer this year. He's 9, and I figured he was ready, but he's not. He said he wanted to wait and just keep sitting with me. I kept trying to talk him into it, but had no intentions of pushing him into it, so sitting is what he's doing. I haven't been in a club in the past few years, so we've just been hunting on our farm. I got in a lease this year and told my son he could go anytime he wanted to. He didn't go earlier in the season. Every time I came home from the lease, he'd ask if I saw any deer. Nope has been the answer most times. I told him New Years weekend if he wanted to go, he needed to go with me because the season was getting close to being over. He went last weekend, and we saw nothing. He told me Tuesday that he wanted to go back this weekend, but not next weekend. On the way down yesterday he said, "Daddy if we see a deer, can you shoot it?" I asked him if he wanted me to wait on a "big" buck or if he wanted me to shoot a doe. He told me he wanted me to shoot the first deer we saw. (I think he's getting homesick)
At any rate, we saw nothing yesterday afternoon, but had a deer walking in a thicket in front of us. Just never could pick it out. Forgot to mention, my son is fascinated by Turkeys even though I'm not a Turkey hunter. He's watched it on TV and wants to go. This morning we got settled in and some hens flew down off the roost and put on a show for us. They were cackling, putting, purring, yelping, and occasionally fighting. His eyes were as big as silver dollars. After the turkeys moved on, he wanted to move to a different spot, so we did. We moved down the hollow a couple hundred yards.
We had been sitting in the new spot for about 10 minutes, when my son, all in one word, said, ITS-A-DEER-DADDY-SHOOT-IT. The deer was about 75 yards out and walking. I could tell it was a buck, it's neck was swollen. I could also tell it wasn't very big, but that didn't matter this morning. I grunted to stop the deer and it stopped behind a blown down stump. My son was whispering "shoot Daddy, shoot" The only open kill shot I had was the throat patch. I squeezed the trigger on the ought6 and my son jumped 3 feet off the ground. I never saw the deer run, but I didn't see it fall. My son wanted to go see NOW, so we did, and the little spike was laying right where he stood before. I guess he started the season as a spike, but both sides are broken off about an inch above the bases. The first thing he said was, "Oh boy, what a day! I got to see my first turkey and WE killed a deer." I just smiled and said "yes we did buddy, it is a great day." Hunting with the kids makes me enjoy hunting more than I ever have. I never thought I'd be excited again over killing a little buck like that, but today I sure was. I hope he continues to enjoy going with me and pray that we can enjoy many more good times ahead.

I always try and let young bucks walk........but if my son, who is only 2 now, ever puts me in this situation I will do exactly what you did. Congratulations, you just made a memory for a lifetime.

You will remember today the rest of your life. He will too. When the autumn of our lives come, and the road is almost at an end, the kids will tell many stories from the past about how we spent time with them. You did it right today!!!! Congratulations to the both of you.

Thanks guys. I knew many of you have probably been in a similar situation so you completely understand. I know I'll never forget today and I really doubt he will. I unloaded my rifle and "let" (suckered) him into carrying it out of the woods while I drug the deer. Now the barrel is full of mud from where he tripped over a limb. LOL Just more of the trip to remember.
joshm28 just get ready, your day is coming soon. That little guy will be following you everywhere you go pretty soon. It gets more fun when he figures out daddy is more fun than momma. LOL I haven't intentionally shot a spike in many a moon, but that one had to die.

Awesome story and congratulations to both of you on your deer. Been there, done that, and got the 5 pt to show for it. One of our favorite hunts from last year, too.

I took my son to TN with me when he was 5 and let him pull the trigger while I held the gun on a deer. It was one of the greatest times I have ever had with my son. He still talks about that to this day. I could not have made a better memory with him. I used to take him bream fishing also when he was little and we would wear them out. He just wanted to catch fish. It did not matter to him how big they were. Same way with deer when he was little, he just wanted to shoot em' Boy we sure had some great times together back then. Life is short guys, time with the little ones is even shorter. Enjoy them while you can.

Way To Go Fur!!!! A trophy should be about the MEMORY, not the B&C score. And that story will be told the rest of both you're lives. The backstraps wont hurt anything either. Thats dadsmanship at its finest.

Congrats on the hunt, you will remember it forever. I have had the chance this year for my 10, and 9 year old daughters to kill their first. My son is 7 and has cut the hair off of one big 7 pt., and missed another 7 pt. yesterday afternoon. He didn't care about not getting either, just that he wasn't scared to shoot the big gun. And in his words, I'm 7 and 2 7pts., next year the 8pts. better watch out. These type stories are what make the world go round.
Now as for the turkeys, I would be more than proud to offer to come a call for your son sometime if you have a place for him to hunt turkeys. I love seeing people kill their first.
