I know you don’t want to feed the fire of the people who don’t want to see what was said in this post. I’m talking about specifically: the way animals are dispatched. The way animals may or might have to suffer before being dispatched. The way animals are considered for dispatch. I’m simply stating don’t put that on the forums great detail. We all know how it is done. I know I’m picking a fight with a long term member (like yourself) that is not my intention. I’m only providing a view from the outside looking in. Because that is what I did for 2 years before my first word.

This took a weird turn last night

Nothing too crazy for me. I did use a small pocket knife to cut a buck's throat once. Once December evening a few years ago, the wife and I were crossing over Cecil Ashburn and I watched a doe scoot across the road a good piece ahead and then seconds later a good buck popped out. He never checked up and slammed into the side of the expedition in front of me, flipped over the top and then landed on his back on the other side. The lady in the expedition pulled over and I ran up to check on her. Her vehicle was banged up pretty good and she was freaking out. Full panic mode. She thought she'd hit a person. Once she got a little calmed down I went back to take a look at the deer and the poor thing was flopping all over the road, blocking traffic. I dragged it by the horns to the side so cars could pass and cut it's throat. Decent 8 pointer.

I watched my 20 year old son sneak up on a 150 inch 10 point and beat it to death with a golf club.

How do you happen to be totin a hammer blood trailing a deer?

I'd bet 90% of the time, it was someone that trailed the deer up expecting 100% for it to be dead. Found the deer alive and ended up running back to the truck and grabbing the first thing they could find in the toolbox or bed of the truck and then straight back into the woods with it. I personally know a wildlife biologist that primarily bow hunted and carried a small ball peen hammer in his day pack. Called it his "little hammer of death". Said one quick pop to the top of the noggin would finish one off way quicker and much more humanely than cutting its throat and letting it bleed out while gasping for breath.

If you ever shoot one with a pistol to finish it off don't do it point blank. I shot a doe in a cutover one time and when I got to her I couldn't find any shells in my pocket. They had fallen out of my pocket when was sitting against the tree. Anyway I get to the deer and it's still alive so I pull out my .45 and shoot it in the head with about 3 inches between her cranium and the muzzle. About busted my freaking eardrums and my inner ear hurt for a dang week.

You are telling me you are standing there with a deer rifle.. but you leave the scene go back to your truck rummage through your BS in the floorboard come up with a #2 pencil, run back to the scene and "dispatch" it by stabbing it through the eye?

BS guys. But - you saved the meat from further damage which is why you did it?

Secondly - I would say it appears that many here need to consider owning a .22 pistol. Not only are they fun to shoot but are also quite useful and are not generally expensive. That's secondary to maybe practicing shooting a bit more with your deer rifle.

Lastly - I'm just going to put this out there for all the PETA folks who will be showcasing this thread tonight when they meet at a Starbucks in Seattle..... please bring your best looking nekkid women with you when you head this way.. No fat chicks ok?

Goat, I'd be willing to bet that almost all the guys on here are talking about bow shot deer and not rifle shot deer. I generally do not have a gun on my person when I bow hunt and a lot of times not in my truck either. I'm behind locked gates and I generally unload all that stuff into the camp when I get up there and I'm sure a bunch of other guys do the same. Unless I am mistaken up until just a few years ago, it was illegal to have a firearm in your possession in the woods during bow season. For some reason, I want to think that the law was changed 6 or 7 years ago to say you could carry a pistol during bow season but I'm not 100% sure.
