Depends on the location, topography, and cover. I generally get no less than 20', most are 22-26'. I always place the stand on the opposite side of the tree that I think deer will approach from. That way I can get away with some movement while the deer approach or feed, and I can draw my bow or raise my gun behind the tree, and then lean out slowly to take aim. I almost never get seen in the tree.
