Blumsden, I’ve never really seen deer lock down here due to cold alone. I’ve seen them seem to disappear with several inches of snow for about 12-18 hours, but then they get on their feet. I clearly remember hunting that extraordinarily cold weather we had the first week of January several years ago. Highs in the teens and lows in the single digits for several days, and I still saw plenty of deer, but it was at the warmest point of the day, not early mornings and late afternoons.

Ideally, the weather pattern I’m referring to is a drop from about 65 for highs and 30s for lows to highs in the 30s and 40s and lows in the twenties. The first front we have in October from 80 to 50 for a high is the best hunt you’ll go on all year. Anytime this happens I try to do whatever is necessary to get in a tree.
