I just replaced a 5.3L in a 2000 ext. cab, lwb, Silverado. It currently has 46 miles on it. I went with Jasper since the mechanic recommended it and he does Jasper warranty work. It has a 3yr. 100,000 mi. warranty. The original estimate was $5900. It ended up at $6350 for a few new sensors, battery, etc.
Jasper had to send 2 motors though. The first one had a dead cylinder that was not discovered until it was installed. They paid the shop for his time on diagnosis and swapping the motors.

What's the issue with the engine that's in the truck now? Lot of knocking at times. Gets very loud. Symptoms say lifter. Using a quart of oil every 1000 miles or less. GM motor not an option. Those on build to order. Friend of mine runs parts for Chevy dealer. 4k plus months to get it. I called and spoke to the mechanic that our family uses to see about replacing my 05 1500HD 6.0 motor (275k). He stated whether I used him or someone else to only get a crate motor form GM. He quoted me $5900 for the swap out. Sounds like you have an oil pressure problem. My lifters start ticking once it warms up and thats when oil pressure drops.

Here is my thinking so 6000 for a new engine but there is still lots of other things that can go wrong with other things that are pricey. I went through this with a 98 s 10 I had loved that truck for hunting 28mpg. But it got to the point where it was nickle and diming me to death. I got an 06 tundra for 11,500 4 door 4 wheel drive. Good luck with whatever choice you decide.

Those motor were pretty bad about having piston slap as they got high mileage if I recall correctly. I put a 5.7 Vortec GM long block in my 2000 tahoe when it went out. They will only honor the 3yr 100k warranty if GM does the work from my understanding. About $2k for the motor. I'm sure the 5.3 is much higher.

I would search inventory at LKQ for a lower mileage engine
