I'm debating myself on buying either a crate engine or one from a salvage yard for my 06 Sierra.
It's got 225k but I don't drive it much, maybe 12k a year or less.
I have no idea what the best company is for a crate engine. I swear I think they all get bad reviews.
Anyone got a suggestion?

I used to think Jasper engines was the way to go but have since read some troubling things about them.
The last time I bought a crate motor, was for a 92 Silverado.
I bought a 5.7L from the dealership to replace the 4.3L I had.
I went that route because it was cheaper than re-building the 4.3 after having the machine work done, and it came with a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty whether I put it in, or had someone do it for me.

Get a crate motor from GM. Comes with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty

Money isn't a huge deal but I'm not spending 4-5k on a motor from GM. Not for basically my hunting truck.
If it was my daily driver I might would.

Makes sense. Only other way i would look at it is piece of mind knowing if it does mess up i have a warranty. U get a terrible excuse for a salvage motor warranty,but i cant blame them for not giving a good warranty bc they dont have a clue if that motor is going to hold up 1k or 200k.

If it were me, I would question spending more money than the thing is worth. If you are set on fixing it, I would go the cheapest route available. Make a financial decision.

Ive questioned it but I'm not spending $25k on a truck with 100k miles either.
Not for a truck I don't drive every day.

I would find a low mileage salvage with no front end damage. They can be had for $1000-1500 with low miles.
The only thing to consider would be the AFM (active fuel management) parts in the newer motors. If they are setup for it, you would most likely need to do to the AFM delete when installing, as from memory I do not think the 06 had AFM.

You only need to consider the replacement cost. I've spent more, on both of mine, than they're actually worth. But the combined expense is still less than the cost of replacing either of them. The only other consideration, for me, is how many other repairs are needed and how much down time will they require. If I'm looking at a worn out drive train and/or front end, then I might not spend the money for a new engine.
I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

But with 225k why are you wanting to replace it if there's nothing wrong with it? Those pre AFM 4.8,5 3 and 6.0 engines run forever. I know of several that's got 400k on them with simple tune-ups and water pumps being the only engine work done to them besides regular oil changes. One guy has 3 of then with 350k on them his newest truck is a 2012 chevy 2500 4x4 with a 6.0 it had 230k and he brought it in because it had a miss going up hill when the truck had trailer behind it. Hooked it up to my scanner found it had random misfire on a couple cylinders. It still had original plugs wires on it and the plugs were burnt up. I put him a new set in it and new plugs and wires on it and he wanted new brake pads and wheel bearings on the front as preventive maintenance since they was original as well. The guy bought it new as he does all his work trucks and runs them to 300k and buys another new one and retires the oldest one of the 3 trucks he runs daily as a spare.

I bought one from rock auto. It’s a ATK engine which is same engine just about all auto parts stores sell. I got it through them for about 800.00 less than the parts stores could sell it for.

I just pulled the trigger on a reman from Advance Auto...$2294.89 with 36 month warranty. Be here in 3-5 days. I got an employee discount because I employ his wife.
Motor comes from ATK North America.

What's the issue with the engine that's in the truck now? Lot of knocking at times. Gets very loud. Symptoms say lifter. Using a quart of oil every 1000 miles or less. GM motor not an option. Those on build to order. Friend of mine runs parts for Chevy dealer. 4k plus months to get it.
