It takes 4 hours, from what I read, for food to travel thru a deer's 4 chambered stomach, so a deer is going to feed every 4 hours no matter what the damn weather is doing. Being in the right spot is where it gets tricky. When its hot deer are not going to move as much, because it doesn't take as much food to keep them going. When its cold, they need more calories. High pressure deer still move, they just do it in thick, narly pockets. Some people cant seem to see deer at the zoo, much less in the woods. I see deer, most times before I ever hear them and a lot of times I never hear them. With smart phones, people spend a lot of time looking at their phone instead watching for deer. Me personally, I like 25-35 degrees, 5mph north wind, high pressure blue bird skies with the moon overhead. I just don't see the deer right before a front moves in. Now if we were in ohio or somewhere where it gets really cold with snow maybe I would see more movement. If they move more when it's cold because they require more calories , why wouldn't the increase be weather related? Temps and their changes are a key part of weather. Also, I don't think they have a timer and feed every 4 hours like clockwork. I believe they were saying, that while deer may move to feed more on a very cold day, the deer was going to move the same amount under other circumstances. For example, maybe on a really hot day he would head towards water as opposed to a primary food source. The time/distance may be similar regardless of the weather, but the route/destination could differ.

Another movement story. I think it was late Dec. through the first week of Jan. 94-95 we had a extreme heat wave in NA. Some of the older fellers may remember it. It was in the low 70's for highs , with high humidity and fog several days. This was right when the rut should have been rocking . Folks were off for the holidays , no one was killing anything or seeing anything for that matter. This unseasonal weather went on for about two weeks. On Friday about the 10th weatherman called for a drastic change , Alberta clipper with 40-50 degree temp change. I hunted that Friday AM , killed a dandy buck. Temps were falling by the minute . That afternoon it started snowing and the wife and I rode around looking at deer feeding in the fields , unbelievable the numbers we saw just in an hour or two. Over the course of three days , Friday, Saturday and Sunday there was more big bucks killed than the rest of the season combined. The processors went from slim to none to overflow in just a couple of days.
Anyone , QDMA , FBI ,CIA, you name them, that doesn't believe the drastic weather change above didn't increase movement and feeding activity over movement the preceding two weeks is ignorant of how whitetails operate , PERIOD!

Been preaching it for years. Forget the moon. Temp change of greater than 20 degrees and rising pressure following low pressure event is MONEY in the bank. Actually, money out the bank, cause it usually cost me $400 on those days.

There are a lot of people on here that claim deer lock down and don't move in extreme cold weather, i'm not one of those, but if the conditions were as you say, Matt, and it dropped from 30 degree's to 10 degree's would you feel the same, or are you mainly talking about a drop in temp from a warm temp to a colder temp?

There is a correlation with deer activity and weather, especially if human pressure is low. If pressure is high they don’t move much regardless of weather. Any time the temp drops 20+ degrees you better hunt. hell thats might near ever day in bama ,,,,, from high to low

Blumsden, I’ve never really seen deer lock down here due to cold alone. I’ve seen them seem to disappear with several inches of snow for about 12-18 hours, but then they get on their feet. I clearly remember hunting that extraordinarily cold weather we had the first week of January several years ago. Highs in the teens and lows in the single digits for several days, and I still saw plenty of deer, but it was at the warmest point of the day, not early mornings and late afternoons. Ideally, the weather pattern I’m referring to is a drop from about 65 for highs and 30s for lows to highs in the 30s and 40s and lows in the twenties. The first front we have in October from 80 to 50 for a high is the best hunt you’ll go on all year. Anytime this happens I try to do whatever is necessary to get in a tree.

Been my observation when it's super cold for extended periods, deer wad up very near , sometimes in the best cold weather food source and stay put. If that's lockdown I guess they do.
