My friend’s wife contacted me about a Christmas present for my buddy. He’s always wanted a 1911 but has never bought one. She has a budget of about $8-900. It won’t be a carry gun so no compacts and it will be a 45. School me on what to look for. What brands and features would you look at in this price range?

Ruger SR1911 with a case of ammo. Spend a little more and buy a Dan Wesson.

She should buy one box of ammo, wrap it up and give it to him with the cash to go pick it out for himself. What you like and fits your hand might not be right for him.

I'd look for something with Novak Lo Mount Sights already installed and an extended beaver tail grip safety. Those are my two "gotta haves" on a 1911.
In her price range, the Ruger SR 1911 would be a solid choice. If she shops around, she may find a Remington R1 in that price range too.
I have a Ruger now that I love, but I'f Remington made a lightweight commander sized gun, I'd look into changing. The one I've handles are on par with a Wilson Combat when it come to smoothness of operation.
There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

I've had dozens of 1911s and Springfield is consistently the best, without getting into the really expensive customs. The factory Springfield mags are good quality, too. You'll have jamming and feed problems with an occasional 1911 and 99% of the time it's a bad mag. I've honestly never had a Springfield jam or hang up. I've had Colts, Kimbers taurus and Ruger all jam occasionally. Never once with a Springfield.
I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

Or she could take him to the gun store and see which one he likes. Just ask which one would you buy if you were to buy one. That's how I picked my wife's engagement ring out. I got her to come by the jewelry store and asked her what she liked. I am glad I did that cause I was a little bit off on my selection.

She had no idea I was going to propose either. Of course she did. It was her idea, you just didn't know it.

joking aside, I like dBmV's idea of wrapping up a box of ammo and cash, then telling him to go buy one.

Can you have your friend's wife convince mine that she needs to buy me a gun?

Can you have your friend's wife convince mine that she needs to buy me a gun? She actually contacted me about a rifle he told her he wanted. Problem is he already bought that one and she doesn’t know it.

At one time Springfield used frames from Brazil(Taurus?) Not sure if that's still the case or not but if I'm buying a 1911 it is going to made exclusively in the US or go for cheap like RIA.

Good information so far, keep it coming. What about Kimber, weren’t they well regarded at one time?

What about Kimber, weren’t they well regarded at one time? Yes, but they’re overpriced. You’re paying for the name. In that price range your best bet is a Springfield then a Ruger.
