What are your thoughts on Goodman AC's?

I need to put central air in 2 houses, and it seems like they are less expensive, but does that mean they are cheap?

If so, what do you recommend. I'm looking for dependability and price over the highest SEER rating.

Also, AC installers that you'd recommend around Foley?

There's a reason they are less expensive. But like k e a car or truck, without regular maintenance and upkeep, even the best systems will have issues.

I just installed a whole new system Tuesday. My hvac guy recommended Goodman. It’s only been 2 days but I’m pleased with it.

I can highly recommend a York, 20 years old with only one minor problem

My step dad typically installs Goodmans or Amanas.

14 years on our Goodman and nothing but 1 capicator so far. Knock on wood.

One at my hunting camp 13 years old, one capacitor

10 years one capacitor so far. Knock on Wood lol.

16 yrs. only issue was a contractor but that was because ants got in it so I really don’t count that.

goodmans quality control has improved alot over the years they used to have problems with coil leaks but that has pretty much been resolved they come with a good warranty and a copeland compressor. they are good budget units but the key is a propper install using nitrogen while brazing and installing liquid line dryers i usually put a suction line dryer on also no matter if its a heat pump or not just for added insurance. also pulling a vacuum atleast twice for atleast 45minutes each time and breaking it in between with nitrogen not air to remove moisture. also replace the copper lines especially if the old unit had a compressor burn out or you are switching from r22 over to 410a. and as for the comments about replacing contactors and capacitors it is good practice to replace capacitors and contactors every year with the annual service if you get an annual service contract those are the 2 most likely parts to fail on most any unit and only cost a few dollars to replace or at least keep some on hand that can be replaced on the spot. having to wait over the weekend for a supply house to open or pay a service tech $150 for a $7 part is not fun for a homeowner.I installed a 4 ton goodman in my own home 3 years ago.

Had my Goodman 2.5 ton replaced earlier this summer. Was about 10 years old, but a total loss.

I wouldn’t install a Goodman in my house, but if you are working with a definite budget, they’ll do the job.

I’ve put Trane and American Standard in my house and family’s houses. I put a Goodman into one of my grandfather-in-laws rent houses because he just wanted the cheapest thing possible and then put a 20 seer American Standard in his house because he wanted the best unit available. We are about to install a geo-thermal into the cabin that we are building simply because we just want to.

There’s plenty of options out there that can meet any want or need, do your research and pick a good, reliable company.

just got one a month or so ago on a new building behind house.

We have Goodmans in several of our buildings at work. We are constantly calling the HVAC company out to come look at them.

I would stay far, far away.

Go ahead and spend the money on a Trane/American Standard.

I never see 20+ year old Goodman systems in homes I'm inspecting. I do come across Trane and Carrier that are that old.

If you maintain them right, service at least once or preferably twice a year, it any system will last much longer.

If you don't maintain them right, any system will die on you much sooner.

When it comes to electronic and mechanical equipment I view them all as disposable and install the cheapest units possible now. It's easier to swallow the replacement cost when it wasn't top shelf to begin with.

I've got a 7 yr old unit at the house and I am on my 3rd coil. It has been a POS from the first day it was installed. Goodman supplies the replacement coil each time but now I'm having pay for labor on the installs. I wouldn't put a Goodman in my black lab's doghouse. When I had all my problems, I started doing research and found that there was a class action lawsuit brought against them but it was dismissed because the judge ruled that not enough plantiffs were affected if I remember right. Only 2-3% of the units sold during that period of time were considered faulty and the judge dismissed the case. From what I remember reading on the dismissal, it seemed shady. Stay far far away from Goodman.

90% of the time the problem is with the install not the quality of the unit. Goodman sells units to any contractor that will buy them so naturally when someone is trying to save money on a cheap unit they use a cheap company and get a cheap install other brands like Carrier, Rheem etc. wont let just any jackleg HVAC contractor sell their name. ive installed dozens of goodman units and never have any more significant issues with them than any other brand. I have seen alot of crap having to go behind someone elses work. a good install is the difference in a unit lasting 20+ years or less than 10
