My son and I hit a new area we normally hunt. I found a 3x3 instantly, he was tearing up a small bush. Hunter stalked within 38yds and could only see the neck and head. The bull finally broke and ran to about 70yds. We bailed and wasn't able to find anymore elk. Saw 2 yotes, no shot.
My boys gonna go get his pay check later and we gonna hit a spot I normally don't hunt before the weekend warriors come alive tomorrow.

Well, I may not sling an arrow this year but, it'll be my own fault for passing on opportunities. Still no more visuals on the BIG 5x. I may take a couple hunts and try to just fill my tag. If I don't, I'll just give myself a damage tag.
Here's a rub from the area

It amazes me just how bad an Elk can tear the woods up. A couple of years ago along the edge of one of the fields in the Cataloochee Valley in the GSMNP, I walked through an area that was absolutely torn up. 12" diameter trees with the bark raked off all the way around. 2-3" saplings torn and twisted like a Whitetail does to a 3/4" sapling. There was a creek drainage that separated two fields that was torn up for about a hundred yards or more. I mean every other tree. It was an amazing sight to see for a Bama Boy like me. It almost looked like a tornado had ripped through the area. I have wanted for a long time to go somewhere to hunt them. Maybe one day.

They definitly tear up some stuff lol. The lil 3x3 was thrashing bushes yesterday when I spotted him.

Wow. I’ve always wanted to visit Oregon. This just makes me want to go more.

Back tracking to last Saturday. Hard to post stories and hunt, and work...
My son and I hiked a hill from hell only to get to the top and hear a bull bugle at the bottom by the road. I decided to stay up top a little bit/
It was drizzling rain and I soon spotted a bull pushing cows up a ravine across the canyon. Around the top of them, another bull. As they approached the top I could see another bull down below. Look right to next clear cut, 3 more bulls.
I chose the cut to the right and we bombed down. After getting across, no elk. Then, boom, I hear a bugle and game on. 2hrs and several bugles back and forth, we on a hot bull. We ended up working upwind on the bugling bull and I separated from my son to get below him to call and all heck broke loose. Hot cow running and a pissed off bull. I screamed (bugled) at the bull and he stopped 12yds from my son. The cow broke left and the bull was doing the same thing so, Hunter sent an arrow. Wack, it hit him but, as it ran off I could see too much arrow, My excitement ended quick because I knew the probable outcome.

Hunter said he saw the arrow kick sideways cause it hit a limb. I think the arrow got angled into the brisket and the bulls still chasing cows. Trailed him. Lost the blood. went back the next day, no elk, no bugles, nothing. Today I rolled in and checked for birds, nothing. If the bulls dead, he's left that entire valley. My goal has been get my son a bull, ALMOST

Dang, I hate that for you and your son. Maybe the bull is a little sore but will live to catch your or your son's arrow before the season is done.

I was never a believer until today, BIGFOOT DOES EXIST. I must have scared him off his stand, I found his bugle tube... He elk hunts for sure

September 23rd was the last day to hunt. I took off work and went to the chicory field. At 1800 a heard some bugles and they were working their way through the timber towards the river. About 1900, I hear a few elk hit the river. A few minutes later, I had a cow at 51yds in the edge of the field. The bull was going nuts in the timber and about 1930, the whole herd hit the river. The water was only about 18" deep and it was loud. I was set up near the 3rd trail from the corner thinking they'd hit trail #1 or #2. Nope, a big cow pops up 3 feet from my face and all crap broke loose.

The elk were running the river from my left to right. I'm about 10ft higher than the river peeking over and after about 10 cows run by, I see anthers coming.. I drew back, whistled him stopped at 15yds, and PASSED (5x4 bull)... More elk behind him including a bugle so, I knew a better bull was coming. As more elk passed, something happened. Now all the elk were running back to my right. The 5x4 came by and I drew but, decided not to chance losing him. No way to track in a river and I knew that the amount of water coming off their bodies would wash away blood on land for a ways so, that was that and my archery season was over. I passed on 3 bulls and had a good time but, I've decided that next year a bull will die.

On a good note... I run the LOP and damage tags for the farm. I met with the Stater y'day and today went and got the first 2 cow tags at ODFW. Guess who shooter #1 is??? Heck yea, it's me!
I'm gonna pop one, keep half and give 1/2 to a neighbor. My freezers can't hold another whole one I don't think.
