I noticed some large black bees while bush hogging earlier this summer but couldn’t determine if they were coming out of the ground. Cut it again yesterday and they are definitely coming out of the ground and had one chase me for about 100yd! I thought only yellow jackets lived in the ground, these look like hornets, what are they?

Sounds like you disturbed a Bumblebee nest. If you got away without getting stung then count yourself blessed

I have never seen them until this summer. I have found 7 nests in the ground while cutting hay this year. The ones I have found are all big black bumblebees. Like a solid black version of a carpenter bee. https://i.imgur.com/STbMnHp.mp4

Yes, gas it like a yellow jacket nest. The big ones are bad enough, but when you get in a nest of the little black bumblebees you won't forget it.

These are the badest of the bad. They will chase you until you can go no more then sting you. Best just stand and take the stinging rather than be tired when you get the stinging. Of course, my feet won't let me stand and take it. But they ARE going to sting. If you look closer they are colored exactly like a bumblebee but their build is slightly different. Bumblebees are more round shaped. These hornets are more elongated. I dont want to be stung but I'll take yellow jackets after me over these hornets. They BAD!!

I stirred em up with my four wheeler to locate the hole. Couldn’t see a hole but narrowed it down to a 1’ square area. I placed a window screen over the area and douced the area with about 1.5g. If I didn’t kill em I at least killed the grass around the hole.

I pushed a nest of what appeared to be bumble bees out of the ground with a dozer several years ago. The nest was about 40 feet from a pond and when the bastes started flogging me I hit the water in full stride. The hardhat that I was wearing was yellow and when it flew off they swarmed it and stayed on it for probably 10 minutes. I eventually got out of the pond while I was being laughed at by my co-workers but I didn't get stung.

Up here in oregon during the dry months I've found the hive built into the ground and several only a couple inches from it. Those dudes hurt. My lab and I got hit a couple years back. Last year elk hunting I walked into them after a bear had been in the nest. Backed off about 15ft only to be in them again. Break cleaning drops them on the spot!

Couple of years back I was bush hogging one of our pastures . First pass near the nest one hit me in the back of the head; I'm a little slow so I didn't put it together till I ran over the nest on the second pass . My Kubota out ran them across the 40 acres with 2-3 in hot pusuit ! Came back the next day in my truck , spotted their hole , marked it and came back after dark with gas. These were the big black bumble bees . Got into a nest of the little ones in my back yard while cleaning up a brush pile. They are the spawn of Satan !

Not sure if it's what you are talking about, but we had an infestation at my church last year. The pest control man call them cicada killers. They nested in the ground just like yellow jackets, but looked like large hornets. He said they only hatch every 7 years. I went there one night after they went to ground and gassed them.

Cicada killers are normally not aggressive. I've had them swarm me, but never got stung.
