How do we know hunters aren't using GC? Just because the numbers are far below those from the decades old elusive survey doesn't mean that GC is underused. Perhaps it indicates the elusive survey was severely flawed. Or maybe the percentage of hunters not using GC is lower than stated. What evidence is being used to determine GC participation? I understand what you are saying and seems you just wanting a casual conversation. Simply, we don't know the accuracy of the numbers. But going into this there was always a question of accuracy. With any system such as this there would be question. What evidence is being used to determine GC participation? Well, this is where its going to lose you because you have stated your opinions on these numbers before. In 2016-17, first year of GC, there was an estimated APPROXIMATELY 235,511 deer killed and only 82,492 reported. In 2017-18 there was an estimated APPROXIMATELY 253,363 deer killed and only 76,009 reported. Those estimate numbers is where you fail to believe as stated in the past. Me?? I honestly don't know. What I do know is we are going 3 years into this and here we are still hashing it out. Also, if year 3 follows the previous two years with estimated less than 40% participating, then what?? The question has also been asked, What if there is 75-80% reporting and the 76K number is very real. Then what?

What makes this system better than the old system, especially since the old type numbers are still being used to get the ,percentage? The old system had opportunity for bad decisions. GC has the same opportunities. Have we improved?

I would say with GC everyone that kills a deer or turkey has the opportunity to report it, and now the responsibility if you believe in doing what has been instructed to you to do. With the Survey, if I killed my 3 bucks and XXXXX # number of doe, if I did not receive a survey I was not asked nor did I have any way of reporting it even if I wanted to. Well, I guess I could have called Montgomery and asked for a survey to be sent to me, so I guess I can't so no way to report it. But regardless, with GC every hunter in Alabama has the ability to report it. So just in that alone it's better than the survey. And for those saying it's too hard, blah, blah, blah. If you (that meaning in general) are reading this post you can access GC and record it. It's either they are too lazy or simply want to break the rules.

What was wrong with the way we used to do it?? There was actually a point in time when our biggest issue was that we thought some areas were getting WAY too overpopulated….. Did we really need to reinvent the wheel on this one?? Why can’t we go back to 80’s style management where does were limited and nobody has to report anything. Wasn’t that working pretty well for the most part?

So the only reason you don't steal gas at a pump, or shop lift, rob a bank, murder someone is for the fear of getting caught? Or did I misread your comment? No, you didn't misread, that's what I said. But understand I'm illustrating a point to show how the human mind works. My point wasn't to truly profess that I'm PERSONALLY a lawless thief, it was to illustrate that by and large that's gonna be the mentality. We have all agreed on here forever that the majority of all kills aren't reported, some of us even say it's probably less than 10%.

Why not issue a buck and doe tag with purchase of license and your 5 turkey tags. Make folks scared to move a dead animal like the Midwest does with steep fines. Make doe tags $20 a piece for additional ones and buck tags $50 up to 3 total. That raises money to hire more wardens to enforce trespassing, poaching, over limit laws. I like how you think. Even if you are an AU fan

HoJo, you know those OMSP deer are not indicative of the average deer in the state. That's a special case and apples to oranges, an invalid comparison.
Let's take average bucks and does from Jackson or Marion or Talladega or Hale or Escambia counties and see if they're starving. They're not.

We have all agreed on here forever that the majority of all kills aren't reported, some of us even say it's probably less than 10%. I think a low % of minds work like that but not the majority. People for the most part are honest and want to do the right thing, My boys were taught right from wrong just as my dad taught me and his dad taught him. Not complying with GC just because you don't like the head of the department is not a reason. Not complying with GC just because you don't think it helps at all, is not a reason. Not complying to GC just because you think the DCNR is trying to pinpoint your location to write you a ticket is- I don't know what. Not complying to GC because you don't have a smart phone is not a reason. Complying to a law or rule that is constructed by a department , any department to help their view of helping the state should be expected, in my opinion. I do 100% agree that if you do not agree with the items I listed you have the responsibility to address the people in charge. But do it in a respectable manner. You catch more flys with honey. I wish for the days that we could go back to the days of kill whatever whenever you want. The Majority of the people will kill what they need or to help others. But there is that 20% that will kill just for the sake of killing. That's why we have laws and bag limits now.

How were they different, other than not allowed to be hunted? They were so over populated that the underbrush was gone from 6' down. They ate everything that was green. What pen do you speak of. it 10,000 acres. They did bring in night hunters and killed them by the thousands. You still cannot plant flowers in houses surrounding the park.

Another thing: I absolutely HATE the current rule about filling out the Harvest Record before moving the dead deer.
That rule is total bs and goes against common sense and common human behavior. We have unintentionally violated that rule countless times. Because when a deer is shot, killed, etc, the only thing the hunter and his comrades are thinking is recover the deer as quickly and quietly as possible. And get it to the front of your hunting property where you can then deal with field dressing the deer and loading it onto a truck for transport. THAT is when I think about filling out the Harvest Record --- before I drive off the property.
The LAST thing I think about during dead deer recovery and transport to the front of property is finding an ink pen and filling out the report.
The rule should be changed to hunter must fill out report before leaving property where the deer was killed.
If you’re a common sense person, you probably don’t feel you have a home in this world right now. If you’re a Christian, you know you were never meant to.

There was no hunting allowed at all until the special hunts, and the sharpshooters, so it's not an equal comparison to the rest of the state. There was no pen - a fence - but those deer in OMSP weren't molested, harassed, bothered or hunted in any way. It was like a big f'king zoo. The deer knew they'd never be bothered in any way. They indeed created a hellacious browse line 6 feet high. You could see a brazillion yards almost anywhere. The first hunt, I think the first night, a guy brought in a 4-year-old doe that weighed something like 80 pounds. That's still not indicative of the rest of the state nor is it an equal comparison to what Frankie stated about not seeing deer starving during his 43 years of hunting. I've hunted since about 1977 or so and never have seen a starving whitetail in a regular, non-park/OMSP setting. That's how they're different. It's an invalid comparison.

Game Check, can and should work but change is hard, very hard for some. As with anything, people will gripe and bitch about this that and the other just to be bitching about this that and the other. If filling out a harvest record on your phone or a pc of paper takes the "Fun" out of it, then you probably need to re evaluate your hobby.
