If only 49er were still around to post the section of the code that charges the dcnr with their responsibility. I don't remember exactly how it's worded, but it said their job was to perpetuate the species. No mention of making hunters happy or growing big antlers. The old dcnr recognized this and offered 4 or 5 different options to landowners on a management program. It was up to the landowner to decide if he wanted lots of deer or just a few. But now Chuck says management is his job. Where did he get that idea?

Skinny, we need 49er back. Let him back in and folks won't have to read my paraphrase. smile

You got it Preacher.

Even though he could be a pain at times , 49er was a our DCNR and CAB watch dog and a wealth of knowledge on the goings on in Montgomery. I miss that Ol' Scudder on subjects such as this.

I just skimmed through the thread, perhaps this is explained and I missed it.

KS is often held up as the ultimate in a progressive state. I don't know how they do deer, but they have no reporting requirement for turkey. You have to tag him, but that's all. I don't know how they estimate the harvest; I presume they do a survey like we used to do. Their system is still a big pain. You can transport him with beard and spurs still attached, or you can make 2 pictures and send them in and get a transport permit. It's all just to make sure nobody shoots a hen, which seldom happens anyway.

My point is that even states like KS require tags and then get no useful information from them. It's just an enforcement provision.

Beat me to that one, and I wholeheartedly agree and concur.

i agree 100% as long as they force you to pay them $10 per deer . hows that work for you ????

they already have to keep track of your name, number, tag your specific deer and keep the meat separate from others how difficult would it be to put a check next to buck or doe on a log? it would literally take a few seconds and turn the log in every year. they wouldnt need to keep info on the hunter just how many deer are killed each year thats the goal anyway right?

Why should someone else be responsible for reporting your Deer?

Ya'll just keep on bitching and you'll see how much worse it can be. Making processors responsible for anything is the stupidest idea of regulation I've ever heard, talk about putting people out of business. The tag idea is just yet another way of raising the cost of hunting, a lot! Reporting your kill the way it is now could not be any easier, NO WAY. It' unbelievable that some of you want more government oversight but yet raise holy hell at the idea of a DCNR roadblock in strategic areas. Sometimes you really need to think about what you're saying and better be careful what you ask for.

It may be easy but it ain't working in the first 2 years.. Us talking about this isn't going change anything. GC is here to stay. Even if there was a change for the worse, GC has proven those changes would just be ignored.

Why should someone else be responsible for reporting your Deer?

if they want an accurate count someone else is going to have to report it because Hunters ain't going to do it as proven in the last few years

How do we know hunters aren't using GC?
Just because the numbers are far below those from the decades old elusive survey doesn't mean that GC is underused. Perhaps it indicates the elusive survey was severely flawed.
Or maybe the percentage of hunters not using GC is lower than stated.
What evidence is being used to determine GC participation?

You, yourself said you were not honest with GC. So we know it's not getting used correctly. Correct?

Get rid of GC all together….forget about tags too. Go back to conservative doe limits and don’t even use hunters to survey dead deer……Instead figure out a way to use something like thermal imaging to survey the animal population itself. I think they’ve already done some trial runs in TN. Something like a timber cruise where they survey known plots or areas. All we really need to see is broad, general changes. It’s all being made way too complicated. The state is trying to micro-manage for everyone.

And I understand, But how are we suppose to expect you to be honest in 1 portion when you openly admit that you lie about another? If you're going to lie--lie about it all. This is exactly why the provision about checking the animal before it gets moved is added. Do you think the GW has heard, "I was just going to recored it when I get back to camp?" Code for--- I wasn't going to tag it at all -----unless I got caught. Or, "Officer I was hog hunting over this corn." Code for I wasn't going to shoot that 8 pt, unless he walks in.

Admittedly, I didn't read 4+ pages of responses, so this may have already been said....

Just like with health insurance, the problem was never "insurance", it was the cost of health services. Your health insurance wouldn't be as expensive if (1) it didn't cost obscene money to undergo services, and (2) Americans weren't the most obese people on the planet. Tampering with insurance is stupid. It is misplaced focus.

The problem with any regulations, or tags, or reporting system has never been those regs, tags, or systems. The problem is an understaffing of enforcement officers. Thus any new rules or systems will not change a thing. When I'm 44 years old, have regularly hunted all over the state, and hunt exponentially more than the average person, and I've NEVER ONCE been checked, then I have zero real concern with getting caught, and it instills a subsconcious notion that apparently it's not all that important anyway. Seriously, if any of this actually mattered, they'd enforce it, right?? I'm very mindful about speeding because I almost never travel without passing a police. But I could go to my club tomorrow and shoot a dozen bucks, and drive home with them in full view and have absolutely ZERO worry about being caught. I don't mind confessing that without some measure of getting CAUGHT, or really in my case without some belief that our DCNR is going to quickly and substantially improve the number and quality of game where I hunt because of my survey, I wouldn't be honest on a survey (and neither is anybody else)---especially on my own land. Seriously, I don't know the right number, but there ought to be 20 game wardens per county.

That was a reason we got so heated discussing the roadblocks a while back. I still have no problem with a roadblock, it simply improves the odds of catching people doing the wrong things.

So the only reason you don't steal gas at a pump, or shop lift, rob a bank, murder someone is for the fear of getting caught? Or did I misread your comment?

I understand what you are saying and seems you just wanting a casual conversation. Simply, we don't know the accuracy of the numbers. But going into this there was always a question of accuracy. With any system such as this there would be question.

What evidence is being used to determine GC participation? Well, this is where its going to lose you because you have stated your opinions on these numbers before.
In 2016-17, first year of GC, there was an estimated APPROXIMATELY 235,511 deer killed and only 82,492 reported.
In 2017-18 there was an estimated APPROXIMATELY 253,363 deer killed and only 76,009 reported.

Those estimate numbers is where you fail to believe as stated in the past. Me?? I honestly don't know. What I do know is we are going 3 years into this and here we are still hashing it out. Also, if year 3 follows the previous two years with estimated less than 40% participating, then what??

Well actually the reason I don’t do those things is because the Bible tells us not to. God does not say anything about reporting how many deer you kill. But we do have to manage god’s resource and I believe that falls on individual landowner’s shoulders to effectively manage their wildlife. There will always be rulebreakers who choose not to follow the law no matter what the government does.
