I've killed deer, hogs, coyotes and a few other critters with a 22-250
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be

I haven’t seen a gas station around here sell ammo in 30 yrs. I would be a lot easier to find wsm ammo, than a gas station that sells ammo.

It is NOT that uncommon in backwoods Alabama to find ammo in a gas station or hardware store. I just base my decisions on buying a gun on how common the ammo and ease of availability. Other people do it. It’s not a foreign concept.

I’d go .243 just cause I like the caliber and I’d want a gun I could use on deer too. My uncle had a .22-250 for a groundhog gun and he stoned a deer or 2 with it. There was a time I studied.22-250 ballistics, and planned to buy a gun. But I never scratched that itch. I didn’t varmint hunt enough. Same deal a few years ago with .22 Hornet. Read a book by one of those old time South Carolina guys who rode around in his car shooting critters with a .22 Hornet 100 years ago. Found some good deals on em but couldn’t justify it.
“Killing tomorrow’s trophies today.”
On the distance I like to walk to my stands: “The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”

AC870 - that is the exact benefit of the .243 you can always shoot a heavier bullet suitable for deer, etc.
That being said I'm in the .22-250 camp myself that's my favorite varmint round.
.223 is hard to beat based on availability and cheap ammo.
They all work.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

When I buy a rifle, I buy plenty of ammo for it from the least expensive source, usually online or at a LGS.
I never go on a hunting trip more than 20 minutes from home with only one rifle, and I usually have ammo for several stashed in the truck during the season.
Local ammo availability has no bearing on my caliber selection, but I can understand that logic. I have killed critters with calibers the average person has never hear of.

To me,I've got plenty of deer guns. I would rather have a lower recoiling caliber that burned less powder. I could shoot a lot more for the same price. A 223 or 22-250 will flatten any deer on the planet with the right bullet at most normal hunting range.

I've got a CVA in 223 and it'll knock the cap off a 1/2 gallon milk jug at 300 yards. 62 grain Federal Fusions = dead yotes.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

It's a rather obscure cartridge, but for 300 yards and under, my 222 Rem will do everything that all the above mentioned cartridges will do, with way less powder and noise. Local ammo sales are spotty at best, but if you don't mind ordering ammo, you can find it at most any volume internet sporting goods suppliers. I handload, so finding ammo is not a problem for me.
But any of the 22 caliber centerfire cartridges will dispatch a yote at 300 and in... even a hornet will fly that far.
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?
