I haven’t seen a gas station around here sell ammo in 30 yrs. Kind of my thoughts also. I like oddball cartridges and it would never dawn on me that this would be a reason to pick a gun for hunting in Alabama. If I was going to Africa, it is a real possibility that your ammo could be lost, stolen, etc and I would want to take a rifle which is more common there. I guess we just think differently. I don’t care for oddball rounds. Neither one wrong. I have forgotten ammo at home and had to stop and get more or turn around. That’s my reasoning. It happens. To each their own. The OP can’t take it however he likes.
