Sorry if this has already been discussed but I need some advice on a bow release. My son just got his first compound bow and I have never bow hunted. I know some are better than others but don't know which is which. Any help is appreciated.

Scott, been around longer than I have been alive. I've had the same one for 10 years, and my Dad is using one from the 80's. Very good releases with multiple styles available.

I know there are some that have these ball bearing looking things that hold the string and then another kind that has a little piece of metal that holds it. Don't know which one is smoother/better.

I've shot the same Tru Ball release for about 10 years. It worked on the doe I killed yesterday in GA.

Get a scott little goose with a buckle strap it wont let you down ! I have shot a scott for as long as I can remember and have never had one fail.My son shoots the same one.They are about 50$

300ruger,
Tru-ball and Scott are popular releases. You didn't say how old or big your son is, but they make shorter releases for youth and ladies. One with a wrist strap, index-finger trigger and adjustable length (between caliper head and wrist strap)should do the trick to start out.
I prefer Carters releases though.

I would recommend the buckle style so that you can use the same hole every time and keep your anchor point the exact same. I shoot the truball and have never had a problem.

I prefer Carters releases though. He's 14 y/o but he's 5'11'' and weighs about 170 so the youth version might not work. BigDalk makes a good point with the buckle being consistent. That sound logical. Looks like I'm looking for the True Ball or a Scott's.

I've never tried a Scott, so I can't say on that one. I do have a Tru Ball and love it. Love the buckle design, adjustable length, and the adjustable release.
