Tru-ball and Scott are popular releases. You didn't say how old or big your son is, but they make shorter releases for youth and ladies. One with a wrist strap, index-finger trigger and adjustable length (between caliper head and wrist strap)should do the trick to start out.
I prefer Carters releases though.
He's 14 y/o but he's 5'11'' and weighs about 170 so the youth version might not work. BigDalk makes a good point with the buckle being consistent. That sound logical. Looks like I'm looking for the True Ball or a Scott's.
