I have a 2005 Honda Rancher ES. When I go to start it up, sometimes it'll fire right up. A lot of times lately though, the solenoid will just make a clicking sound. However, I can cycle it through the gears while rocking it back and forth really hard, and it will fire right up. Sometimes I have to do this several times before it will start. When it first started doing this, I could put it in 1st gear and back to neutral, and it would fire up. Now I have to rock it back and forth. Is the solenoid the problem, the starter, or something else?

could be a weak battery or the bendix sticking in the starter if the solenoid is clicking its probably good something is causing the starter not to engage. try hooking up jumper cables to your car and see if it gives you problems if it cranks good off the car you can bet on it being a weak battery. sounds like my last atv every 2 years it would do that and it was always the battery

Disclaimer: I know nothing about your problem. Does it have an interlock switch that keeps it from starting in gear? If so, I would start there.

I have a 2004 ES. It has to be in neutral to crank. Ensure the display shows "N". I think you have a weak battery and you are not actually shifting to neutral you are just hearing clicks but not enough juice to shift.

My rancher will crank in gear if I'm holding the brake. What happens if you try this instead of being in neutral?

Is yours an ES? I can only start in neutral.

Thanks for the info. I will start with the battery and go from there. Never tried to crank it in gear, and I don't know about the interlock switch. But, if it's the battery, why will it start after rocking it back and forth?

I had this same issue with my 2003 model. After I kept pressing the start button, the engine finally started but the starter kept running until I disconnected the battery. After that it would just click and click. I ended up ordering a $15.00 solenoid from eBay. Haven't had any issues since. I'm not saying this is your issue, but it might be worth a try.

I've got an 06 ES Rancher. Sounds like a weak battery to me.

I am not an expert but you may be aiding shifting into the gear.

Hook up some jumper cables to your car and see if it improves.

On mine, You can crank it ingear if you have the brakes fully engaged. On mine It is the right handle on the handle bars.

Mine has a kick start. Try that and see if it fires up. Could confirm a battery issue.

Okay, I just hooked the 4 wheeler up to my truck battery with cables, still wouldn't do anything but click. I am assuming it's not a battery issue. After unhooking the battery cables, I ran it through the gears while rocking back and forth, and it cranked right up. Cranked 6 consecutive times, then started clicking again. I also tried cranking it while in gear with brakes depressed as suggested, but got nothing.

I'll try the solenoid next. Thanks for the replies.
