I've seen poor & been poor, and I know that some of what we call poor are well-to-do by standards in other places. I've been hungry too, but thank God I never had to eat mudfish. I've received mercies that I didn't really deserve, and denied mercy to some who did deserve it, but I try to remember that but for the grace of God, there I would be.
To refuse to show kindness & mercy because of the letter of the law is ignorance towards humankind. this^^^^^^^^^^^^ troy Exactly right!! You may not ever be a game warden but you may be a juror one day and that's a good principle for jurors to remember. My old man said you can't give everyone a gun and a badge. What Troy did was use common sense. Not sure where he finished his career in law enforcement, but I am sure with decisions like that he was some type of supervisor(or should have been).
Doing what is right in a situation is not always what is popular. That's why he was given a gun and badge to make decisions to the best of his ability and not be an idiot Robocop.

the last thing you want is a by-the-letter-of-the-law officer....
I wrote the chit out of tickets when working. I might of let that one slide.
When I was in Greene Co my partner, Harvey Foster, and I rode up by a shack of a house biy first seeing light. An 80 or so year old black man and his 10 year old grandson?? were just starting to skin a yearling doe. They had a big old pot on a fire next to them. They had that deer-in-the-headlights look when they recognized the warden truck.
The old man shot the doe(out of season) just before daylight with a flashlight(nighthunting) in his garden with a .22rf(illegal weapon). They lived in a POS shack you could throw a cat thru the walls.
I got out and talked to the old man for a minute er so. I told him to carry the deer out back so I couldn't see it and got back in the truck. Harvey agreed. We left. I could of wrote him a sack of high paying tickets, but there are more important things in life than writing those tickets.....
and nobody in Greene Co thought of me as easy on violators....quite the opposite.
I never had a second thought about what we did and would do it again tomorrow...
troy I don't have an issue with this at all, I thought there are laws in regards to subsistance hunting or what ever it's called.

If you let the old man slide in the original post, he will soon be on a path to a life of crime. It starts by putting out a little corn to get him a doe, next thing you know he is breaking bad in a motorhome cooking up meth, where will it end?
Troy, you related an actual story for us, but never said whether or not you would let the old man with the corn slide or not.

Kendall, I might of, might not of. I wasn't there. It would of depended on my prior knowledge of this hunter and how it went down at the scene. Every case is different.

Yes, that old man would probably be raping children and beating women, and supplying our kids with drugs within 6 months. gotta nip in in the bud early. throw the book at him. :thumbup ...rolleyes

Some of ya'll don't think there are folks that poor in Alabama, what rock do you live under??? I worked Greene and Hale Counties for several years. I promise you there are folks that are poor as all hell, and too proud to work the system.
I used to carry squirrels to a twenty something year old black man to clean on halves. I carried him some ducks one day and he said he didn't do ducks but I might see a neighbor, Miss Estelle.
I went by her house. Ya'll in the country have seen ones like this. Old. Wood. Needed paint. Broom swept dirt yard with whitewashed rocks around it. I met Estelle and asked her about the ducks on halves. She agreed and I left. Picked em up next day all cleaned and washed, well, 1/2 of them.
She was near 70, raising half dozen younguns, none of them hers. Some grandchildren and some neighbor kids who got dropped off. Oldest girl was 19 and attending college in Tuscaloosa and working two jobs, and living at home. She didn't "play the system", but did cleaning jobs and such for money.
I'll bet she couldn't of raised $300 if her life depended on it.
I carried her every piece of meat from confiscated animals and donated some deer I killed. I took her 300 pounds of yellow catfish that was confiscated from some telephoners. She took some of it and distributed the rest to other poor families around Akron.
Damn fine hard working POOR woman.....
Ya'll that say a ticket should be written for ANY violation need to get put from under yer rock more often.....
1982 er so I spotted an old car parked off the Lock Eight road near Akron. There was small cypress pond back there. I eased out of the truck and walked to the water. I spotted a 50'ish black woman fishing, along with five younguns fishing around her. I approached them and all went quiet. She was of those old country folks that won't look up as you as they talk.
I noticed she had a gallon milk jug next to her near full of squirming 5-7 inch mudfish. I asked her what she was going to do with them She replied "we eats em"....
Any of ya'll that know mudfish and have tried to eat one knows how hungry someone must be to "eats em"...
I told em to careful of snakes and walked back to the truck...

My brother worked Perry back in the late 80's through the mid 90's and there was an old man living in a 100-year-old sharecropper shack a half-mile back in the woods from the nearest road without running water or electricity. He was a good, God-fearing man that didn't hurt a soul and worked for every little bit he had. He grew what he could and killed a few animals from the land he lived on to survive. He did just fine well into his 70's. One cold winter night, his house burned down around him. Don't know if it was a lit candle, the fireplace, old wood stove, or arson. I do know that he never intended any harm upon anyone, and got treated decent by the local LEOs because of it, no matter what the "law" said about "game animals". I can tell you that he never got a ticket for shooting a doe with a 22lr because he needed to eat either. I've found that MOST LEOs are good people. There are a few bad apples, but that's just life and people in general. Same applies to LEOs too.

I've found that MOST LEOs are good people. There are a few bad apples, but that's just life and people in general. Same applies to LEOs too.
I think most people with an unfavorable opinion of LEO have that opinion as a result of their own actions...not the LEO's.
