I did some lengthily comparison research on the F150, the Dodge Ram, and the Tacoma back in 2015.
My requirements were mpg, (at the time I had a 2001 Dodge Ram 4X4, Off Road with the 360 Magnum. Got around 14mpg), 4X4, with Off Road and Tow Package, Quad, Crew or Extended cab.
The high mpg claimed by Dodge on the TV is fine print event. Those that get the high mpg are base priced at $60k plus, it's in the fine print at the bottom of the TV screen.
Normal mpg Dodges that fit my criteria were 14-17 mpg and priced around $45k plus depending on options and packages. Both a mpg and price no go.
Tundras lost out immediately based on piss poor mpg at 13-16 mpg and started at $45k also.
Ford was my preferred choice and so I really looked hard at those. Shocked would be an understatement at the price of one that met my criteria. They started at $50k and quickly went up. Even the Base single cab 4X4 started at $40k.
Tacoma 4X4, Off Road and Tow Package with 4.0 V6, 21-24 mpg had sticker price of $35k
Ford salesman would not budge on price, I guess they were selling really well at he time.
Toyota immediately dropped $3k but I still balked at the $32k and went home happy that I still had a pretty dang good Truck in that Dodge Ram and made up my mind I' would drive the Ford Focus we also owned to work and back, it got 34 mpg.
The next day Toyota called and ask that I stop by so I did and they dropped the price another $1k and gave me another $2k for the Dodge bringing the price, before taxes and fees, to $27.7k
I walked out the door at $28.7k after taxes, fees and a single $500 promotion cash back which is rare for a Tacoma.
3 years later and nary a single issue.
I say go with the Tacoma or whatever you want to drive!
Disclaimer: even though I loved my Dodge Ram and had my heart set on the F150, I've owned 4 Toyota Trucks, 2 Tacomas, A '85 SR5 before they were Tacomas, and a FJ40 and swear by them. I've never had a single issue with any of them except for the 95, the first Tacoma I bought, had a recall on head gaskets. It never ran right after they repaired it so I traded it and $2k for a 98 Tacoma.
Hunt'em hard when they are hard to hunt but never, ever hardly hunt!
