By the way, if you had ever had to work a 1/2 acre garden with a hoe, or a mule, you would know full well that you don't waste time growing field corn to bait deer with!

Gotcha...my apologies. Until it is legalized, I would write a ticket for sitting over a pile of corn all day long. Even a sick old man that needed the meat to feed his family? There is nothing that says a warden HAS to write a ticket for every offense. Warnings are given by LEO's all the time.

Scenario A: Fred gives the Old Man a citation. The law's the law. Period.
Two months later, a rapist is loose in the area. Or a robber who is beating up women. All law enforcement is combing the area. Fred knows the Old Man and his grandson know a lot of people in the area, attend the local church and are pretty plugged in.
Fred drops by. Old Man tells Fred to get screwed. Grandson tells him to get screwed. Rapist attacks three more people including a 12-year old girl before being caught.
Scenario B: Fred doesn't write a citation and uses discretion. Knows the Old Man ain't a road-cruising, baiting POS nighthunter who causes problems like some of the other trash in the area.
Old Man is grateful. Figures he did what he had to do and might have to do it again to feed his family, but is grateful for the common sense and discretion.
Fred drops by two months later while canvassing the area to help in the search of the rapist. Old Man's grandson has told the old man about some chatter at the local hangout. It's just chatter, but there's a familiar nickname or two in it.
Fred passes along those nicknames to his other LEO sources, who follow up with their people and make arrests four days later. It also helps clear up three other crimes two counties away where the POS criminals did their mischief.
Fred doesn't go back to visit the Old Man until maybe the deer hunting season when he drops by to see how his season is going. Old Man is grateful for not receiving a citation, has some hot coffee and a pot of deer stew from a legally-killed doe, and his grandson has taken the Hunter Ed course offered so he'll be legal, too. Grandson mentioned something about maybe going into law enforcement to help other people.

Scenario C. The rapist IS the grandson and he has no fear of the Law and a sense of entitlement due to jis Social status. I wouldn't have written the old codger a ticket either...... But, I figured I should at least bring a little reality to that quaint little Fairy Tale!

I figured I should at least bring a little reality to that quaint little Fairy Tale! Grandson could well be the criminal. But that A-B "quaint little fairy tale" ain't always just a fairy tail. LEOs go through those scenarios and have to make those kind of decisions.

Give me a break. I agree that officers can and should exercise discretion. However, I don't think that someone age should matter in this case. What if it was a 25 year old guy, would it be okay then? The point here is, there is no way this man is feeding his family, what the phuck are they doing that no one can afford rice and beans.

Holy cow - been a few days since I signed on and it seems a lot of people must have gotten something shoved up their a$$ as a Christmas present.
The old man could have just as easily lied and said the deer was hit by a vehicle in front of his house - but instead, he was apparently honest about what happened.
As for the OP - I don't know what I would do. I think I am faced with a similiar situation where I currently hunt in Bullock County - but, I can't prove it and am not interested in calling the GW on a local (always a bad move for a club), in case I am wrong.

Troy did the right thing in his case. But the guy buying $10 dollar corn to bait deer should get a ticket. He should use the corn money to buy grocerys. He could problably put the word out that he would like some meat and get plenty from the local hunters.

I don't know anyone in any profession that thier job doesn't require some descretion of some kind. That is where common sense and compassion are needed. I know that GWs and other LEOs have some tough decisions to make. Whether you agree with all of them is irrelevent. I would think that the idea is to have officers that make the right choice most of the time, and that they can sleep with the decisions they make because they did use common sense and compassion in making them.

I am actually going to have to vote for the ticket. I believe in our system and everybody has to do their job for it to work the way its suppose to. I think the old man would probably appreciate that point.
