Scenario A: Fred gives the Old Man a citation. The law's the law. Period.

Two months later, a rapist is loose in the area. Or a robber who is beating up women. All law enforcement is combing the area. Fred knows the Old Man and his grandson know a lot of people in the area, attend the local church and are pretty plugged in.

Fred drops by. Old Man tells Fred to get screwed. Grandson tells him to get screwed. Rapist attacks three more people including a 12-year old girl before being caught.


Scenario B: Fred doesn't write a citation and uses discretion. Knows the Old Man ain't a road-cruising, baiting POS nighthunter who causes problems like some of the other trash in the area.

Old Man is grateful. Figures he did what he had to do and might have to do it again to feed his family, but is grateful for the common sense and discretion.

Fred drops by two months later while canvassing the area to help in the search of the rapist. Old Man's grandson has told the old man about some chatter at the local hangout. It's just chatter, but there's a familiar nickname or two in it.

Fred passes along those nicknames to his other LEO sources, who follow up with their people and make arrests four days later. It also helps clear up three other crimes two counties away where the POS criminals did their mischief.

Fred doesn't go back to visit the Old Man until maybe the deer hunting season when he drops by to see how his season is going. Old Man is grateful for not receiving a citation, has some hot coffee and a pot of deer stew from a legally-killed doe, and his grandson has taken the Hunter Ed course offered so he'll be legal, too. Grandson mentioned something about maybe going into law enforcement to help other people.
