I don't agree with that. I've met quite a few GW's through the state and know quite a few LEO's. I might go 90/10, maybe 92/8. Glad you did what you did Troy.

I know lots of LEO's including one Marine Resources officer. From what I have seen, officers early in their career seem to want to write every ticket they can...but they seem to mellow out after a few years.

Not a fair comparison...You can't compare a crippled, run down old man needing meat to a douche bag. That leaves you chit out of luck...Get a better job or another job. If you've got time to make 13 THOUSAND posts, you've got time to work more. WTF is he gonna do...Reverse age?!

Is baiting and killing deer out of season legal if a bureaucrat gives you a depredation permit to protect your huge crop and let the deer lay there and rot but not if you need to protect your little garden and feed your family with the deer you kill?

What's the game warden's job with the permits... enforce the law or turn his head?

Totally hypothetical and very unrealistic scenario in this Day and Age really.

IF you can afford a gun, ammunition and a $10+ bag of corn.......you can afford to buy staple food items.

You could assume that, but on the other hand you could also assume he grew the corn, and inherited the gun...that just leaves a 2 cent .22 shell.

Man you got to get out in the backwoods more often. We are not talkin about people in the farming buisness, we are talkin about some old man with a hoe and a half of an acre garden.

I agree with ya for 99% of the time. The old wore out dirt poor 80 year old I let slide was in that other 1%

btw, I NEVER said the old man had put corn out, I didn't see any either. He stepped out on the porch to piss, saw the deer, got his ancient iron sighted .22 rifle and shot it 20yards from his shack, off his porch while it stood in his garden. I'd bet money he didn't have gas money to get to the courthouse, much less pay a fine.

I'm glad a LOT of ya'll ain't law officers.....

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I say you need to get out more too. I do home health and go into homes everyday were people are having to wait till first of the month just to buy peanut butter to eat to get their blood sugar up. Lots and lots of very poor people in this state. I know a family that for 2 months them an their kids each got only 1 mustard sandwich a day. They had to ration out to make it. I had my wife go to SAMs and buy them groceries in bulk. We don't know how good we have it. I get on my kids all the time when they say "I'm starving". I tell them they have never been remotely close to starving.

There's also a couple that pick up road kills "illegally" and get the meat cause they struggle. I'm sure others in the state do the same.

I guess I don't understand how someone can starve in this country when I see people driving new cars and buying big screens and getting food stamps at the same time.

I just expect the same laws to apply to everyone. We have a government who is constantly legislating letting people slide because one person has more than the other and they don't think that's fair. Let judges judge and law enforcement enforce.

Cause the people you see and are talking about aren't the same kind of people that Troy is talking about. What you see are the ones that have figured out the system is really just a game designed to buy votes and transfer wealth to them as part of what they are "entitled" to.

The fellow that Troy is talking about is the guy that is more than capable of taking care of himself and will do so without ever asking a thing of anybody. And if you offer him he'll probably politely decline it the first time, and tell you to go to hell the second time.

Laws are not absolutes as much as some of you would like them to be. LEO's as a whole would have a whole lot better reputation among the general public and find themselves much more liked, respected, and aided, if there were more who used the kind of good judgement that Troy is trying to tell you he used.

Should let it slide. That is what officer's
discretion and prosecutorial discretion is all
about.

If that happened I would talk to the D.A. and
respectfully ask for some of that discretion since
the GW didn't have any.

The spokesman for the "deer study committee" that proposed restrictions on hunting that are not authorized by law said he didn't believe you could kill too many does. But we have a closed doe season when the law says it should be opened.

Then the DCNR issues "crop depredation permits" instead of leaving the season open like the law requires them to do. Then they require those deer to be left in the fields to rot. And they also allow baiting with those permits.

So what's the problem with letting this one slide?

I wrote the chit out of tickets when working. I might of let that one slide.

When I was in Greene Co my partner, Harvey Foster, and I rode up by a shack of a house biy first seeing light. An 80 or so year old black man and his 10 year old grandson?? were just starting to skin a yearling doe. They had a big old pot on a fire next to them. They had that deer-in-the-headlights look when they recognized the warden truck.

The old man shot the doe(out of season) just before daylight with a flashlight(nighthunting) in his garden with a .22rf(illegal weapon). They lived in a POS shack you could throw a cat thru the walls.

I got out and talked to the old man for a minute er so. I told him to carry the deer out back so I couldn't see it and got back in the truck. Harvey agreed. We left. I could of wrote him a sack of high paying tickets, but there are more important things in life than writing those tickets.....

and nobody in Greene Co thought of me as easy on violators....quite the opposite.

I never had a second thought about what we did and would do it again tomorrow...

troy

good example of exercising sound and
appropriate discretion.

No one said we should let all violations slide, just that the discretion exercised in these two cases was acceptable (even commendable).

Discretion and common sense are part of everyday life.

Life is not always black and white, cut and dried, X and Y. It's just not.

Those who want it to be so are living in a dream world. Wish for it all you want, rail against "the man" or whatever, but it's just the way it is.
