I believe you're correct, Tracker.

But like removing a hat indoors it's an outdated custom. We should stop doing it. Folks can just wave now.

hats off at table , reverence to god as you pray for the meal then reverence to to the meal that god gave you . off in a house respect and reverence to the owner , just a guess

A few things I've found out researching the subject of removing the hat:

"A relic of the ancient custom of taking off the helmet when no danger is nigh. A man takes off his hat to show that he dares stand unarmed in your presence."

"Taking the hat off is the modern remains of the ancient custom of Knights who removed their helmets in the presence of those they felt their friends and thus, before those they wished to honor by showing that they trusted them. A man removes his hat before a woman to show his respect. Touching the brim is but a perfunctory salute."

"Taking off hat/cap - in medieval Europe knights and soldiers had a helmet as a protection. Entering a home with a helmet on was a cause of serious concern. It was considered entirely unfriendly and a new custom emerged of taking of helmet and later whatever you were wearing on your head (ladies excluded)."

"In the days of knight errantry, every one meeting a stranger had to suppose him an enemy; ten to one he was. And the sign and proof of friendly intention was raising the right hand without a weapon in it. The hand was raised high, to be seen as far as they could shoot with a bow, and a further proof was added when they raised the vizor and exposed the face. The danger of the highway continued long after knights ceased to wear armour; so, with the same meaning, the same gesture was used, but with a lifting of the hat. There are many other references out there but too many to list here.

I wear a cap at all times....home....out to eat.....work....the only exception is church....I do not wear a hat inside at church. I do dress appropriately but I do not wear suits....I will wear a coat and tie at a funeral if I am asked to serve as a pallbearer but aside from that it is business casual for me.

Hell I'm already hated by 90% of the aldeer brethren just because I wear a yeti het. Might as well swing over the remaining 10% and admit to turning said ball cap around backwards on occasion and wearing flip flops (*GASP*). I take my hat off when I'm indoors, but that's just personal preference. Now, adhering to Marine Corps custom and courtesy and uniform regulations is (was) an entirely different matter. I busted my Marines' asses for getting sloppy in that regard.

I think it's just a custom and tradition that has changed over time. Not necessarily disrespectful. On the subject of respect, I am over-the-top hard about Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, Please, Thank You, holding doors, coarse language, etc., and am coaching my sons and daughters towards the same.

While it is an old custom and was initially to show the other person that you are not armed, a handshake to me shows respect between two people.

On this part I'm in total agreement.

A handshake shows respect, but not removing your hat or cap during a meal or when you're indoors is OK? Or at church, when it really should be off your head and not on it?

Removing a hat or cap when indoors or greeting someone, females in particular with a hat-tip, was a show of respect for decades.

Why one and not the other?

I failed to consider places of worship. Of course hats come off in church and during prayer.

On the other items, I'm not saying they're right or wrong or even make sense, but cultural norms evolve over time. Greeting another man with a firm handshake is still accepted and standard, even for my screwed up generation.

Not just a handshake but a look them in eye firm handshake. I hate to shake hands with someone that doesn't look me in the eye or has one of those limp handshakes that make you want to either crush their hand or wipe yours down with hand sanitizer.

My grandma would tell you that wearing a hat while you eat is just a sign of poor raising.

You know I am not much for personal attacks or to pass judgment on what others do with their own views, rights, or life in general as long as it doesn't infringe on my own. However you sir a schmuck who's views I can do without in life and be the better for it! I can't believe it has taken me this long to do it but I am gladly placing you on my ignore list so I don't have to see your post, comments, or views ever again. I assume growing up in Kalifornistan you never benefited from having your azz properly stomped to teach you some common decency, manners, or respect which is evident by most of your views. I am sure you will really excel at selling sandpaper in the south if that abrasive personality is evident in person as it comes across here.

I honestly hat wearing a hat or anything else on my head. I will wear them from time to time but I much rather not.

I wear a hat all day everyday unless I’m in church, praying, eating, National anthem, etc. I was fortunate enough to be close to my great grandmother for a large part of my childhood and she instilled the “no hats at the table” rule in me. I believe it’s probably a respectful thing to do but honestly I mostly do it because it makes me think of her every time I take it off to eat.
