Planning on doing a little fishing in the beach in a week or 2. Is carolina rigging live shrimp a good way to go about it. I have one of the catfishing combos what weight line, leader and hooks?

Yea. It will work. I’d fish peeled dead shrimp though for whiting or some pomps if they still there. Should be. They could be in ankle deep or past the sand bar. Live shrimp you will probably feed to skip jacks and hard heads. I’d walk the beach with your bass tackle throwing hard baits also in morning and evening for specks. Keep all the heads and cast out at dark on biggest rod you got with steel leader and catch a shark.

What beach?

If the waves are less than a foot, I would fish live shrimp under a slip cork in the troughs in the first and last few hours of daylight. It’s almost time for the trout to start running the troughs. Live shrimp on a Carolina rig will catch some fish as well. Bass fishing gear works fine, use a treble or kahle hook for live shrimp. Use as little weight as possible to keep your bait on the bottom if fishing with a Carolina rig.

Orange beach. Don't really care what I catch. Just wanting to give me something to do and let my boys try to catch a few.

Dead or live shrimp from the beach and you will catch something.

Be careful with catfish if you catch one.

Watch them hardheads they'll slime up everything you got. We that's all we kept catching and some fish the guy beside us called a American grunter and some other fish that striped like a sheepshead but was only about the size of a crappie i didn't k ow what it was neither did they guy fishing beside us. One of the hardheads almost got me in the foot I went to step over it and it flopped up stuck the top barb through my shoe and was just barely poking me in the arch of my foot but never broke the skin ended up having to take my shoe off to get him off shoe

A hardhead fin stuck in the foot is one of the worst things you can experience. Much, Much worse than a freshwater catfish. The striped fish you caught was probably a juvenile black drum. There are plenty in the surf and they have the stripes like a sheepshead. Another thought: You could take some small spinning reels and put gotchas or sprot jigs on and take the boys to the pier at Gulf Shores. A good variety of fish to catch there.

Should be able to. (especially if it is lighted) Fish a free lined shrimp under the lights. If it is not lighted, I would fish early morning and late evening.

If it's not lighted, buy a couple of those portable construction lights and turn them on facing the water the first night. By the second night you should be able to wear out some trout/reds/flounder on a free lined live shrimp. My other favorite bait is a jerk bait rigged on bass hook with no weight. It'll jerk across the light like an injured fish.

One of my favorite surf fishing spots was given to me about twelve years ago from Mo Shaffer of Mo Fishin in OB. After you go over the Perdido Pass bridge heading East turn at the first beach access spot after the state park entrance. There's a couple of port o toilets there so you can't miss it. Once you get to the shoreline turn and walk West about a hundred yards towards the jetties. There's a grassy spot there about 30 feet or so from the beach. I've caught pompano and reds there many of times fishing with sand fleas and live shrimp. I use something similar to a basic carolina rig because I have found by keeping your bait off the bottom it could result in catching less trash fish. I would use enough weight to keep the current from constantly washing your bait in with a two foot fluorocarbon leader. Good luck and y'all have fun!

When Did Mo pass?

I'm not sure but according to the folks at Lost bay bait and tackle he did. I knew he was sick and would ask other folks about him but never got any current information. I've googled and searched recent obits but didn't find anything current. If any of y'all have facebook I know he had a site there.

Hate to hear that. He was always super nice when he had the bait shop.

Try falling on one and it sticking in your chest to the point you stand up and its still in you. I was sick for 7 days and thought I was gonna die. Miserable

I had to cut the fin from one out a buddy's hand a few years ago. We were wrecking the specks and reds just inside the pass at Crooked Island Sound when he got stuck. He wanted to keep fishing, so I cut it out for him. Before he could get to the Dr. the next day his hand was throbbing and looked real bad. Those things are bad news.
