I'm sure it gets mind boggling all the little things.
Probably more of a Brandon question but how does one insure a project like this?

You pickup the phone and call Brandon.

Wasn't sure if you insure at the current status, current+labor invested or proposed completed value.

I insured it for a specific value, which is the value of the house minus the land. I figure barring an earthquake or volcano, the land should be good for a while to come.

I want to say it worked out to be about $300-$400 a year for the insurance. Once I finish it I'll convert the builder's risk policy over to a homeowner's policy with Brandon.

That is one heck of a nice cabin, you and the Mrs. really have a talent!!!

I've got some friends who have rented their condos/houses through them and got fed up with it. They are renting though their own websites now.

But to answer your question, probably not. I'm not putting all this sweat equity into it so some jackass can come up there, destroy it, and then leave me a bad review. I don't need the money that bad and I sure don't need the hassle. Same thing goes for our beach place we will be building as soon as we finish this place. If I build something to rent it will be just that... A rental place. God willing... I won't need to rent stuff to people in my retirement.

Well... We came home early today because we were kind of unsure about the weather and felt after all our hard work this weekend it would be nice to just have a lazy rainy day on the couch. So here I am watching another guy build a cabin on YouTube and posting on Aldeer about building mine.

We both headed up to the cabin on Thursday so we would have a good, full 3 days and it really paid off. We were able to finish the shiplap in the big bedroom upstairs and also in the upstairs hallway. Plus Mrs. Irish and I were really able to hit our stride as a carpentry team with her doing the cutting and me installing. I think now that we have our system down we will be able to progress fairly rapidly (At least for us two ) Anyway... On to the pics.

Because each shiplap piece is slightly different as they come off the portable sawmill and since they are hand routed, and as they dry the ends become slightly narrower then the middle, what I ended up doing is taking the overall dimension of a typical wall divided it in to the equal spaces that I needed and then made me two long measuring sticks that I could tack up on each end of a wall where I was working. This enabled me to keep a check on the spacing and levelness of the boards as they went up without having to constantly measure or having to dick around with a siding gauge or anything like that. I only have two hands and Mrs Irish is cutting down at the saw.

I knew were were getting really close to using up the first 800 S.F. of shiplap that my buddy Larry delivered so I called him earlier in the week to make sure that we could get another delivery. He came through, the great guy that he is. This is what 1600 S.F. of locally sourced and milled shiplap looks like on your back deck:



I'm hoping that this is enough to finish the interior of the cabin. We are using a lot upstairs which is why I chose to start there. The walls are tall and there are a lot of cuts to be made, whereas the downstairs is only 8'-0" high and everything is square.

Of course you bust butt all day and it's nice to have a cold one and put your feet up:



My father (Who use to own his own construction company) and my older brother (Who is a master carpenter) both came by to visit, have a few beers and give their seal of approval to all the work being done by the amateurs...

Anyway that's all for now. I feel blessed to have found the property that I have, to have met such great friends up in Cherokee County and up on the mountain and to truly have a help mate as a life partner. She is one hard working gal and a lot of the credit goes to her sweet Momma who raised her right and kept her prayed up.
