I've always heard it call - "long" or "short". Basically either leave the line or remove the line.

Try explaining flatness in microns. It gets confusing pretty quick Well, I wasn't going to bring up microns, puncheons, hogsheads, rods, or cubits. But since it's been brought up, can any of you without the help of google define more than one of them? i know a micron is one millionth of a meter only because I use a micron gauge to leak check hvac systems have not a clue about the others

There ain't a framing contractor in the US of A that uses 32nds. If they say they do it's only to be polite while your son is there. I guarantee you on a job site the measurements won't be called out to the saw guy as 106 & 15/32, it will be 106 & 7/16 and cut it a C**t hair long. That's standard lingo around every single framing crew I've ever been around. Most framers are going to round it to 1/8ths anyway especially on longer cuts

Thirty seconds are bigger than sixteenths because 32 is bigger than 16  This has nothing to do with carpentry but we were negotiating a mineral lease on our property one day and we were going back and forth with the lease hound. I had him at $3k+1/4 an acre. My uncle stood up and told the guy that if he wouldn't give him 1/5 he wasn't signing. The lease hound jump on that. I cut that chit short and had to sit and explain to my old uncle that 1/4 was a larger amount then 1/5. We had a good laugh after all was said and done.

Well, we usually just say heavy or light if it falls between . My mentor was pretty precise so I’m the same way.
To answer the op, I’ve never said “ I need a board that’s 11 and 3/32’s “
I would just say 11 and 1/16 heavy.
I never get like that framing but use that terminology very frequent in just about every other party of carpentry.

I helped my uncle hang and finish sheetrock while I was in high school. I heard the cabinet guys measure in 32nd. The sheet rock guys didn't call out anything smaller then 1/8th or 1/4 depending on what the board was being cut for and fine tuned with the rasp. There was a new young guy working for a carpenter on the job we was sheetrocking and he got told to come help us for some reason so we let him measure some and he called out two numbers and the whole house started laughing when he called out "36 and one fourth" and the next number was "84 and three fourths"

I came up doing metal fabrication. 32nds were common and 64ths weren’t unheard of

I don't measure to the 32nd of an inch but when I am measuring tight I will mark it fat between the 16th's to compensate for the thing-a-majig on the end of the tape. I also glue that thing so it won't move because it will move enough to mess you up. Nate, that thing is 1/16” thick and moves back and forth 1/16” so you can get the correct push and pull measurements.

We use16ths, but it's very common to call out a number like13 and a fat 5/16ths. Or 11 and a skinny skinny3/8ths.
