To be fair though Todd, you didn't see any of the attacks or dogs involved. Although I'm sure some we're pit type dogs. You must work in a large city?
We are required by law to report all dog attacks to the county animal control officer. They investigate the attacks further and do share information with us including the breed of dog. But we do gather as much information as we can as well. As for how I can say what breed is involved? Well most of the attacks are not by some stray unknown dog. Many times it is a neighbors dog or even the family dog. Just to give you one example. The last one I had was a 10 year old girl bitten on the thigh, buttocks and arm by their own family dog. The mother said it was a pit bull and showed me a picture of it on her cell phone. I'm no expert but it sure as hell looked like a pit bull to me. Now I suppose if you want to be overly skeptical you could say that the animal control officers aren't pit breeders and neither am I so the animals involved in some of these cases could perhaps have not been 100% pure pit. But I find it a little odd that pit bulls seem to be the only breed that are defended in this manner. I never have people accuse me of not being able to identify a German Shepard or a Doberman. Or tell me not to blame some other species of dog for an attack because we didn't have DNA testing to make sure that the animals grandmother was a pure breed.
