All animals can snap. Pits, foo foo dogs, labs, whatever. Pits and a couple of other breeds just happen to be a hell of a lot more likely to seriously injure you when they do.

My ex girlfriend had the best damn dog I have ever been around. He was half German Shepard and half Golden retriever. Think blonde German Shepard with the long hair of a Golden Retriever. Beautiful dog and very protective of her. Super loyal and loving. That dog loved her. He was a bad ass dog. I remember bringing him a bunch of rib bones home one day from the BBQ place. Most had a little meat on them. I was going to just hand him one and she told me just to put the whole container on the ground. So I think he's going to to just take one and kind of gnaw on it like most dogs do. Nope not Chester, he proceeded to start eating them like you or I would eat pretzels. Unreal.

I saw her in the grocery store several months ago and she was showing me the scars. After the tornadoes came through there was some damage to her house. She went to a hotel for a night and then next day went back to survey the damage and get Chester. He was under the deck in the fenced in back yard. When she approaches him he attacks her. The only reason she is alive today is because a neighbor heard her screams and ran over with a shovel and beat the dog off of her.

After she had been in the hospital a few days the animal control lady calls her cell phone and said they had her dog and he was sitting at her desk just as calm and peaceful as he could be and ask her if she wanted to come get him. She was like, "um... No. I'm good." grin

My point being is that I don't know enough about any breed of dog to like them or dislike them, however all animals have brains just like we do and can freak out at any time and do something crazy.

I think a lot of it comes down to the owner. I also think pits are a more aggressive breed. I mean their purpose of being bred was to fight other dogs and hog hunt. Back to the owner part, it's how much time do you want to put in training and teaching the dog discipline. For me, not a lot. That's why I won't ever own a pit, German Shepard, Doberman etc. I'm fine with my Weimaraner and Weenie dog.

We had 2 Dobes growing up and I’ll be honest, outside of teaching them some basic obedience, we didn’t train them all that much. We had 11-12 kids in our neighborhood that were within 4 years of each other so their training was growing up around a lot of people (aka being very well socialized). They played with all of us nearly every day. They are much much more even tempered dogs than people realize but they get shy easily if they haven’t been socialized.

For the most part your right. Behavior test have them pretty far down the list as far as aggression is concerned. But as far as the breeding part goes. Sure they breed the more animal aggressive dogs, but they culled the human aggressive ones for 2 reasons. It'll get a dog killed in the ring and second it's too hard to handle for refs and owners. It was a very undesirable trait. To even be registered, they had to be a grand champion, meaning they won 3 fights. It's almost impossible for ahuman aggressive dogs to do that.

That's pretty interesting. Did they kill off the ones that were aggressive to humans? I guess I'm asking how they need that trait out of them

The owners had to be able to handle the dogs long before they ever got into the ring, they had to be fed, excercised and everything else. Before they fought they would be put on "keep" sometimes other people would keep their dogs. Basically it's the a special diet and exercise 2 months before a fight. This would be nearly impossible with a human aggressive dog. Once in the ring there in with a ref and have to be handled by a handler( owner or someone he hired) between rounds. After 3 wins, then they could be registered. Reading the history they just say the others were culled, I'm assuming this means killed. I've never been to a dog fight personally, I find it cruel. I do like chicken fighting though, even in chicken fighting, human aggressive birds are very undesirable because they're dangerous in the ring and usually get murdered

Not true. We all agree the dog should be put down and the owner charged. It's obvious you missed the whole point of this discussion.

I feel the same way. I wouldn't trust one around my child and I sure wouldn't want one if I lived in a residential area where it might come in contact with other peoples kids. I have been a RN for 21 years. The majority of dog bite cases I have personal knowledge of involved a pit bull. "ALL" of the really serious maulings I have cared for in the ER involved a pit bull.

To be fair though Todd, you didn't see any of the attacks or dogs involved. Although I'm sure some we're pit type dogs. You must work in a large city?

I've seen several purported "pitbull" attacks reported in the news. Then when they show a picture of the dog, it is simply some half-breed with cropped ears.

I wouldn't ever have pit or let my kids be around one but in my town last year a great dane attacked a little girl and she had been around the dog before. A pit bit my grandad couple years ago also

Completely agree but that’s any dog that bites a human regardless of breed. People teach dogs to be aggressive, usually through lack of discipline and not coaching agressive behavior.

All I’m sayin is not all of any breed are a problem, it’s the owner who controls that.
Dogs like people can have stress and many things can cause that, if you own a dog it’s your responsibility to keep the people who may encounter it as well as the dog safe and be in control of the situation.
That goes for bulldogs, labs and chihuahuas

You absolutely know it was a pit or you think it may have been a pit or you were told it was a pit. Big difference

Almost every dog attack/bite call I ever responded to in Birmingham was a dispatched and described as a pit. A few times it was and most of the time it was a mutt that didn’t even resemble a pit. That’s my point every dog bite/attack is a pit bull even when it wasnt

I like a good chicken fight too... Some roosters are just man fighters and they never make it to the pit. The last thing you want is a rooster to turn on you with a razor sharp blade on its leg.

One of my long time friend is big into rooster fighting and he spends more time with those birds than anything else.. Daily interaction and not being rough with them goes a long way

I didnt miss any of it. The point being made is once again the pit bull breed demonstrates that it's an agressive, dangerous breed. Then debates begin when we have people try to defend that by bringing in guns and tiny squirrel sized dogs. A pitbul does not have to be trained how to fight and be aggressive.

I've only been around half a dozen Pits in my life but they were all great dogs. They were all dogs who came from good breeders and had a quality upbringing. Friendly, playful and VERY devoted to their families. That being said, one day I was at a friend's house who owned one of these dogs. My Lab was with me too. The dogs knew each other well and had played around numerous times. This day the Pit, with no warning or provocation, decided to latch onto my Lab. He wasn't playing either. Damndest thing I'd ever seen out of a dog and I have experience with Shepherds, Dobies and Rotts.

So what are you basing this expertise on, some news article you read on aldeer. You don't anything personally. You base your whole argument on nothing but a media article. Then you argue against folks with a lot of experience on the situation. That's why most folks make a comment then say " well I'm not gonna argue with you about it" that's because there really ain't nothing else they can say. Cause they don't know what they're talking about, despite having such a strong opinion. It's laughable.
