I am very impressed by the participation rate in this topic. I never would have guessed it would have touched a nerve for so many.
Well Done folks! Keep up the hard work! I am proud of the Aldeer crowd and their steadfast devotion to their opinions and beliefs.

Chris is destined for D.C. He's great at creating legislation that he has zero intention of applying to himself. He was seen, multiple times, just last year returning to dock with undersized and over limit snapper... and then had balls enough to not allow his catch to be documented by the survey staff.

I don't know, you'll have to ask him. He damn sure bet the house on it and looks like he's about to lose and he knows it.

I don't know Chuck, but being the 'high up' in any Gov organization down off Madison Ave has got to come with some self-imposed 'clout'. So I'm sure there is some ego associated with what he's doing. The head folks, esp in a Governing capacity, always seem to want to leave their fingerprints on the org... or legacy, as was stated earlier. So, there may not be a ulterior motive to what he's doing, other than trying to develop a legacy to leave on the org for the generations behind him to admire.

I bet he can't wait for the day he hears someone say at a conference, "Hey, that Chuck Sykes guy down in AL was a pioneer... the one who instituted the Game Check."

And of course he's pissed that it seems that there is a very poor compliance rate with it. It's his baby... he's emotionally attached to it.

What I can't get over is the fact that he and his colleagues seemed surprised that folks ARE resisting this mandatory reporting. Think about the seat-belt law, when it first was instituted. The driving masses bucked against that for, what... a decade? Now it still isn't 100% compliance (there are always going to be the 'around town', or just running a half-mile to the store where folks don't click-it), but I'd be willing to bet that a heavy, heavy majority use seat belts, even when they just drive down the road a mile or two. It's become habit, just like the Game Check system is going to become several years down the road. And how did ALEA help convince drivers that using seatbelts was a good idea? Yep, you guessed it.... writing more tickets to people who resisted the law. Sound familiar?

Will any good data be produced by the system to help prudent wildlife managers tackle the real problems? I think so. But right now, it's still in it's fledgling stages and until the compliance rate trends upwards, whatever data it produces will likely only be used as conversation towards mgmt. implications, rather than driving the mgmt. itself.

yes, but the state also said we have way too many does and YOU CAN'T SHOOT TOO MANY DOES. The state sold the hell out of that idea and a lot of folks bought into it. I did somewhat in the start.

And the seatbelt law is still a stupid unnecessary law!! It was MANDATED by the Government to save yourself from yourself and if you don't comply they will use the FORCE of the GOVERNMENT to DEMAND THAT THE MASSES COMPLY TO THEIR WISHES!!! Sound Familiar?

,

Yes, the state screwed up. But in their defense, if coyotes were taken out of the equation, where would be now? Did they consider predators? Did they have any idea we where going to be put in a predator situation like none have seen in our lives here? Without coyotes, could we shoot too many does? I don't know the answers but I know the results. Yes, they screwed up but I don't really fault them. They were blindsided by coyote and not knowing them. Their major screw up was/is their slow response time. Hunters in certain areas ones long ago there is a problem.

Late 80's as my weak mind recalls. That was the start. I remember a farm getting on some type of QDM about 80 or 81.

Did start late 80's but really took off late 90's and early 2,000s . Many things happened in Alabama during that same period, coyotes, row crop farming all but ended in much of LA. Wholesale doe blasting along with other factors made for the perfect storm in many areas. Not much of a problem in Jackson Co. though, hard to kill them out in these mountains.

I'm telling you, I'm the absolute worst on memory. I know this farm in talking about was the first i heard of and knowing the people, was able to keep up with what they were doing. This farm is part of Gray Rocks Ranch now for those in the cattle business. They had a biologist, not sure if he was state of not. They started out shooting spikes and does. In a couple of years all they could see on food plots were bunches of small rack bucks. The does seemed to stay on the neighbors property because come the rut, they killed some bucks bucks. But they stuck with the program, minus the spikes which only lasted a couple of years. They never where pleased with the results and had the proof. They had bigger bucks prior to the program looking at racks before and after.

late 80's, 90's. QDMA didn't have anything to do with it.

started with DMAP (1980 ) and giving out a LOT of doe tags. I hunted a place near Eutaw where five hunters could see 50+ deer each any evening on 2000 acres. After five years of hammering does you'd be lucky to see 10. And most of the does killed were in the woods, not on the fields.

All of this doe killing started about the time the yote population exploded.

The early 80's I was referring to was the DMAP i recall now and it was a state guy working. The state guy and the ones running the farm have since all been killed in varies ways.

Yeah, I guess DMAP in the 80's is where it started and then in the late 90's and early 2000's is when it really went main stream statewide and the doe seasons were really extended.

I thought I remember QDMA working hand in hand with southern states back then to get more liberal doe harvests,,,,,Isn't that why there was so much backlash against them by many on here? I'm asking.....my memory sucks too. grin
