The 5.3 models with the AFM (8 cyl to 4 cyl) from 2007 - 2012 I think most definitely are prone to oil consumption and lifter problems. Oil issue isn't a big deal, just got to add 3-4 quarts every 5k miles. Otherwise a strong engine.
I just recently had my lifters replaced. Would have had Hoggin do the work, but I had my water pump go out while traveling down 280, so I had a local shop do it down my way in Shelby County since I was having it towed anyway.
I've heard the newer models fixed those issues, but I can't confirm from personal experience.
