Obviously they've had some major issues with oil consumption up until recently, I've been told that issue is fixed. What say you? Anyone with a '14 or newer have any experience?
I'm going to buy a new truck, had pretty much crossed them off because of that, but you sure can find them cheaper than tundras and f-150s.

I’ve got a 15 z71 that I bought new. 48k miles and it hasn’t given me any problems. Just sucks buying 8 quarts of 0-w20 oil to change the oil.

5.3 is a long way from being a problematic engine. My first preference is a 6.0 hands down but I’d take a 5.3 over any other engine in the free world today period. In fact I’d buy those 2 before I’d take any other late model engine for free if I had to feed it and take care of it

5.3 is a long way from being a problematic engine. My first preference is a 6.0 hands down but I’d take a 5.3 over any other engine in the free world today period. In fact I’d buy those 2 before I’d take any other late model engine for free if I had to feed it and take care of it Really? I've heard nothing but bad things about them up until 2014. Nearly everyone I know with one in that year range started using oil between 100-150k. I'm just trying to understand if the newer ones are actually fixed or if they just haven't gotten enough miles on them yet.

Oil consumption or not.... I don't have a bad thing to say about those engines. Hell, Look at all the Suburbans, Tahoes and Trucks with 300k miles still running strong. They are everywhere. I've known plenty of guys with those older 5.3's that haven't had a bit of an issue. Don't know if they had problems with oil consumption or not, though.

Oil consumption or not.... I don't have a bad thing to say about those engines. Hell, Look at all the Suburbans, Tahoes and Trucks with 300k miles still running strong. They are everywhere. I've known plenty of guys with those older 5.3's that haven't had a bit of an issue. Don't know if they had problems with oil consumption or not, though. I saw an article where the GMC and Chevy suburbans have more vehicles on the road with 200k miles than most any other.

I have an 05 Tahoe with 125k and have 0 issues with it.... other than the fact it doesn’t have a truck bed
I quit culling when I realized I was a cull

I'd be wary of the person that warned you about 5.3s being bad engines.
A mans got to know his limitations.

Certainly some ‘Yoters on that list. Sequoia was actually #1.

I had an 01 Z71 SWB with a 5.3 in it. That truck would get down. Sold it to a buddy that still drives it every day... Nearing 300k and going strong

Maybe I should clarify. The 5.3 that drops 4 cylinders on the hwy is notorious for oil consumption problems. I'm not saying the engine itself is bad. It's not debatable on whether this consistently happens in those particular year models. A quick Google search proves its a common issue.
My simple question is, does anyone have positive testimony on a 14 or newer with over 100k miles?

Or all the internet research I've done that confirms it? Or the friends and acquaintances who've personally experienced it? Once again, I'm simply trying to find if the 14 and newer trucks have solved this problem. The dealership obviously claims they have.

I’ve got a 14 gmc 97k miles. No issues with oil, but might want to do your research on the a/c issues. I’ve had to replace hoses and condenser 3 times so far. I’ve been told it’s been fixed for the 15s and newer.

The 5.3 models with the AFM (8 cyl to 4 cyl) from 2007 - 2012 I think most definitely are prone to oil consumption and lifter problems. Oil issue isn't a big deal, just got to add 3-4 quarts every 5k miles. Otherwise a strong engine.
I just recently had my lifters replaced. Would have had Hoggin do the work, but I had my water pump go out while traveling down 280, so I had a local shop do it down my way in Shelby County since I was having it towed anyway.
I've heard the newer models fixed those issues, but I can't confirm from personal experience.

Austin i have a 2006 silverado with the 5.3 in it, 259,XXX miles on it. not the first issue with oil consumption. i change it every 5,000 miles and run 20w50 full synthetic in the the summer and 10w40 in the winter. i have put it in more places then some 4x4 will go but thats just me using a tool to get things done that got to get done..
