I am a gas grill kinda guy. I grill probably 3-5 times a week on average. I am going to purchase a smoker. I am not sure what to look for. Do you guys like propane or electric better? Also what size? I have a family of 5. Would you buy a Bradley or some other brand. I believe in buying quality and only want to buy once and be happy with my choice.

If you're wanting a gas/electric one, the Masterbuilt one at Sam's for $299 is an excellent one. My Dad and next door neighbor both have one and they love 'em. It looks super easy and what I've eaten from them has been pretty tasty. I've never purchased one because I prefer the old fashion type fueled by wood alone. I prefer fairly heavy smoke and with the gas/electric type they don't seem to infuse the smoke to the levels I like. That's my only knock on them.

I really like my $70 Brinkman Electric. It's plug and play. 4 big butts are no problem and I rigged a third rack so I can do 12 half chickens at a time.

Look into the Masterbuilt Electric at Academy or Sams Club. Works the same as the Bradley except not as expensive and uses regular wood chips instead of the hockey pucks. If you process your own deer it Works great for smoking sausage and jerky. Makes dang good BBQ too.

On the Masterbuilt, are the wood chips "Fed" manually or do they drop automatically? How do you control the heat? Manually or is it digital? Thanks!

Not sure I agree with you on the Traeger being junk. It may not be capable of running a commericial operation, but I've got some buddies who do competitive Q as well who have turned out plenty of award winning meat on a Traeger and a good ol Weber.

The masterbuilt smoker is manual feed. Load the hopper and you have smoke for at least 3 or 4 hours before it needs more.

Ok maybe junk is not the correct word. I just know
a couple of people that have them and do not like
Them and a couple of the smokin forums people
That have them have nothing good to say about them
But I do not have first hand knowledge wih them

I have a 4 rack gas burner from Lowes that I've had for 4 or 5 years. It has served me well.

My opinion...
Personally I believe that most of us are not proficient enough at PREPARING THE MEAT that the smoker itself is not THE key to the whole scenario. Meat half ass injected/prepared and smoked on a Traeger will not turn out near as good as as well prepared meat smoked on the $60 Brinkman electric that we have at hunting camp.YMMV
