The way I understood things is upon death you get welcomed to the streets of gold or cast into the lake of fire. I don't know of any waiting room, transition period or possible hangout scenario.

Basically, without going too far into it and not starting a dreaded "spin off" thread:

I have never seen anything in the Bible that supports the idea of "Purgatory". It is a Catholic idea that stems from a misunderstanding of the redeeming and sanctifying work of Christ on the cross and verses that surround that.
